Thread: Shimano Stella & Diawa Saltiga - WHY?

Re: Shimano Stella & Diawa Saltiga - WHY?

unless i am mistaken jigging has been around longer than the stella or saltiga what did people used to use.
37kg of drag what line are you fishing to use 37kg of drag and how many people can hold 37kg at arms length for more than 10 seconds.
would i buy a stella or saltiga, yes, why for the same reason i buy nike sneakers, more olympic gold medals are won wearinhg nike than any other shoe.

Fish, unlike humans have evolved so rapidly over the last ten years, that unless you use the latest and most expensive high-tech bling, you are not in the race.Give me a break! The pro's in W.A. used to catch Samson's on handlines, which bis just as "sporting" as 100lb braid IMHO.

my penn hasnt broken off the rod yet

Biggest thing i have caught on the penn 9500, well didnt really catch it, but bring it to the boat and cut the line, was a monster ray off flat rock, i had the drag on very tight and on 18kg maxima, thought it was a big yellow fin, hour later we saw what it was when the ocean turned black and thought bugger this and cut the line, not sure how many kgs it would have been but bloody hell i dont think i could see any blue water around the boat.

Re: Shimano Stella & Diawa Saltiga - WHY?

    Wow very evocative? thread Fellas!!

Well in My opinion - these big Stellas and Saltigas are Overpriced!!
Its like comparing a Commodore or Falcon to a Benz honestly is a Benz worth 5 or 6 times the Commodore??
    I dont think a 20000 Stella is worth 4 or 5 times as much as a 9500ss.
Sure they have more bearings for smoothness and apparently are more stronger? than a Spinfisher. By the way has anyone yet found out if the stella has a stainless or Bronze maingear like a spinfisher or a Super Duralium one - read aluminium one?? Has anyone heard of them stripping their gears in the shimano or daiwa??
I reckon Jack Erskin could beef up the drag and that "weak" anti reverse on the Penn for a few bucks!!
The new SS has more bearings so should be a smoother reel over the old one?.
I love the one about the overheads twisting - poor didms! . I really pity the guys that fight huge black Marlin and massive sharks on overheads for hours!!! must put them into hospital!!
oh i wanna know what weight rods these guys are using with their 35kg drags?? Must be frigin telegraph poles!.
The local guys that fish the shelf for Sambos etc in my neck of the woods seem quite happy using their Penns and shock horror - ALVEYS!! yes was someone mentioning a 6-7 inch lever drag center pins and what a capacity! think Alvey still make the geared one too - well there u have it!!!
At Least with the VanStahls etc you can see where the money goes into making them so xxxy - parts make from solid machined high grade alloy machine cut stainless gears etc etc.
But im sure as someone else said a lot of the price with Stella and Saltiga is in marketing and premium for the name! and im sure 12 bearings dont add up to $300 - maybe $50 or so!
So there u go Guys Im not doubting that they are up there with the best, but my opinion - Overpriced! like so many things out there in the world. Still if you can afford it ..... well you can - no probs

The big stellas and saltigas are made to fish for big fish that to pull them out of their homes, they need to be stopped dead! they're not made for the ordinary fisherman nor are they marketed towards the run of the mill fisherman chasing snapper, jew, or rat kings/amberjack.
Pistol pete was saying that the fish that are chased by fisherman using this gear such as XOS amjerback (eg 50kg amberjack) or big kings or dogtooth tuna need to be stopped before they hit reef. He never said that he had caught a 50kg amberjack, just that if you're chasing big fish like that, you will never...i repeat NEVER get them onto the deck of your boat using a spinfisher or similar priced reel.
    Well Said Mattooty,

Noelm, you obviously have a problem understanding what is being said.
I certainly cant claim to have caught a 50kg amberjack (not many fisho's could)....But have landed some nice amberjack and hooked GT's and yellowtail kings to 30kg landbased which have just laughed at the gear I was using.
Bear in mind when we livebaited for kings we used TLD 50's with 100lb straight through fishing 12kg of drag....(any more off the rocks is a recipe for disaster).
So here is the problem.....Besides the saltigas,Stellas and the Van staals, what other reels can you buy that can cope with the huge drag required to stop these fish....?????
If you look at the likes of Nomad who specialise in the chase of enormous GT's and Amberjack they are using Stellas and Saltigas for one simple reason.....THEY ARE THE BEST ON THE MARKET!!!......They have caught GT's up to 68kg for god sake!!!.......I wonder why there are no spinfishers on board.....

I recently bought myself a Saltiga expedition and I can tell you after using the reel it is incomparable with anything else I have used before....
How is your old cork handline going mate.....

    CAMMAC
The guys who fight huge marlin and sharks don`t do it standing up with a rod bucket. They do it from a chair with the rod in a holder so it can`t twist or get pulled out of the boat.
With the graphites and kevlars to make rods with now,
most 37kg rods now are thinner and lighter than a 10kg fiberglass one .not telegraph poles! how much drag does an Alvey pull?

Re: Shimano Stella & Diawa Saltiga - WHY?

Each to their own I reckon.
Most people would think me nuts for spending over $300 for a set of screwdrivers but I don't care what others think. I wanted them, needed them, got them and use them all the time. They're about 10X the price you can get a set of Stanley's that'll do the job but...The expense was well worth it in my books.

If I wanted to or needed or able to get one (Stella or Salti) I would as I don't drink, don't smoke, don't do much anything (and everybody needs at least a couple of ways to throw money away) and if I needed a reel to do the job then I would get one.

Horses for causes...quality does usually mean costing more and usually quality lasts longer and you tend to use it more just because it's so nice to use and no hassles.

I might buy one one day just for the smoooothness of the reels. I'll probably never get to use them to the full extent of their capabilities but I love that quality feeling instead of the rough, gravelly feel and noise of some other reels I have

Mind you though. This is from a person who still loves and prefers the old $10 4" Alvey for estuary fishing

I CAN see what you are saying, I am just stating "the other side" I know what can be caught and what can be caught repetitively on what sort of gear, my point is for the AVERAGE person who will never fish every day and catch 50+KG fish (like nomad charters) then almost anything will be OK (Spinfisher included) never said they (Stellas) where not good, I still say they are not worth the money (my opinion) I guess I am just going oposite to the "flow" just for the sake of debate, some very big fish have been caught on very cheap and crappy gear (even a handline) and I know that good gear is nice to have and use (I own a lot of "good" gear) I just reckon that bold statements by people who have never "been there and done it" but rely on Magazines and DVD's to make judgement need someone to debate with.

Well said again Finga....I totally agree.
You do get what you pay for....
I still own five alveys and absolutely love them.....For beach and rock work they are the best......You dont have to go expensive at all for most forms of fishing.

    Agreed with you there Noelm,

Its no good talking to people who simply read magazines and dont fish often.
Its also true that some VERY big fish have been landed on crap gear....
The only thing I am saying here is that if you are going to seriously chase big fish on a regular basis like big GT's,kings, and amberjack then there is no point in mucking around with cheap gear...as.... 1.You will lose 90% of your fish hooked and..... 2.The gear doesnt last.
Unfortunatley these days there is also a GIANT range of CRAP reels on the market....(I work in a shop and see them come back very quickly).....nearly all made in china and unless you seriously look after your gear they turn to $hit very quickly....Even the spinfishers arent what they used to be and are now made in china!!!..........Personally I think it comes down to how much you fish and what you wish to catch......If you fish 5 times a week then I would rather pay for quality straight away and have it last.

Mate you should get out fishing more, All overheads twist , it's just when you get into the higher drags that you really start to notice it! Spin reels are easier to use jigging as there below the rod not sitting on top of it! Every thing under load wants to find the lowest point it can get to with a spin reel the line is already at the bottom of the arch but an over head the line runs on the outside of the arch and want to twist the rod !! The reason you dont notice this twist when fighting large marlin on overheads is that the reel is held by the harness which stops it twisting , infact when harnessed up either in a chair or Stand-up ( Reggy ) you can release the rod and give your hands a break the rod is that locked in.

    Ian

Ps i own a accurate jigging reel and rod ( overhead ) but spinning reels are MUCH nicer to use.
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!

Re: Shimano Stella & Diawa Saltiga - WHY?

I dont have any probs with the rod twisting - i build my rods with the guides rite on the backbone with low mount guides - and of course use gimbled butts in an appropriate harness and bucket and as you say look Mum no hands!!. im like lots and lots of guys who fish short strokers big overheads standup for big fish - with no complaints - no problems!
the rods are still telegraph poles im referring to the flex not the thickness!! flex like a telegraph pole common u know what a telegraph pole flexes like - about 50kg class rod!
ask the boys who use Alveys what drag they can muster with carbonex washers all i know they seemwork on plenty of species out wide i personally dont use them!! a mate of mine used them in west oz for land based Spaniard fishing and managed to bring home some big XOS suckers! and dont forget you can palm an alvey for some added ooomph!

anyway getting back onto the topic they are still overpriced with say a Penn SS in my opinion and overpriced compared with the construction quality of a Van Staal. And sure they are definitely necessary if you cant find anything else that will do the job. so is there anything out there thats cheaper in spinning reels that will do the job as nicely and as well ?? looks like not.

You said it in one, if it's cheaper it won't do the job.

If you look around a bit you will find the big Stellas for about $930 in Aus

Mate you are so wrong with your comments regarding heavy jig rods (30kg plus),as stated before these rods are thin, some no thicker than your little finger added to this they are parrabolic, that is they bend right through the length of the rod when loaded giving the angler a tool that can exert great force on a fish in a vertical situation while keeping the mechanical advantage a fish has to a minimum,it is not unusual to have the majority of the rod from the grip foreward pointing at the water while you are holding the rod at about 30 degrees off horizontal.while we are at it,how many of 'your boys with alveys' actually jig or toss popers? None I'm guessing, likewise being trussed up like the christmass turkey is not going to work for the kind of fishing these reels are used for,the only reel that is close to being budget priced that I've seen work for any sort of time is the Spheros and these get tired prety quick if used week in week out (compared to the reels in question),I do how ever find it appropriate that you used the words 'overpriced' and 'Penn' in the same sentence.
