    Fishermen at war!!!

Now potentially this thread could turn into one of those, so sorry if it does.

The last few days I have met a few people that are fishermen, now as you know in a room full of people it won't take long for a few fishermen to find each other.

But when I left, I started to wonder, are recreational fishermen about to become split in two? I guess kind of like pro fishermen and rec. fishermen are now.

The catching a Feed fishermen, and the C&R fishermen.

You only need to look at a few posts on here to see the debate some people end in because someone kept a few (or sometimes even one) Fish.

I found out these few guys were into fishing so mentioned fishing only to find they were not really into what I was interested in....now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate all forms of fishing......apart from types with big nets I guess. But when I asked these guys what fishing they do, Offshore, estuary or beach they both sort of went estuary, Ha. We go offshore. (no doubt to catch a feed, And bring home a feed for me missus, ooga booga!! )Sorry, they were just like that!!! (plasterers)

It is not the first time I have come across that sort of mentality: 'we won't fish estuaries we want to feel the fish on the line!' was another comment I remember well!!

As I said earlier, I fish Bait or lures. And I don't mind fresh, estuary or offshore fishing. I like being able to do something different all the time, but I definitely feel there is a division entering amature fishing.

What do you all think? Do you think maybe the huge rise in lure fishing is contributing to this?

All my opinions, sorry if I offend anyone, I guess after all I am a carpenter!!! Sean

Wouldn't be the first carpenter to contribute to an opinion split there Sean.

Mate I'm pretty new to the whole fishing game but am totally obsessed with it and talk to whoever I can whenever I can about it. I haven't really come across a division like the one you refer to (which sounds a lot like the whole League vs AFL debate really) but there are definitely leanings towards one or the other. I suppose in every walk of life there are w.anchors but from the people on both sides of the argument that I've spoken to there seems to be respect for each other for the most part.

Still, like I said I'm still new to this so...

    Hi Sean,

It doesnt take a real lot to be an OK offshore fisherman, if you can find reef you can usually find SOME fish, river fishing usually requires a lot more "finesse", something many boofheads in life dont understand.

As to the division in fisho's........ I think often the C&R guys dont understand when
an offshore fisho comes home with a box-full, I have been accused of taking to much here before.

There are whingers on both sides of the fence.

Personally, I love fishing whether it's on the shelf fishing for cod, or fishing with littlies catching little undersize fish.

Sean I know the above is a bit of your post but mate but there are a number of points in your "thread" that I don't necessarily agree with and I think you are a bit off the mark (don't you love a country with freedom of speech).

Firstly catch and release V's keep.
If you couldn't keep "em" according to law - they would be undersize and need to be released ( as most fisho's do).
(I'm not talking about or supporting a zillion fish on one trip).

Secondly deep sea V's estuary. (Went out on a charter 3 weeks back from Tweed heads and caught nothing (sorry a bream that went 22mm (and had the best trip).

Who gives a sh#t!!! Its great to be on the water (wheather it's 60 fathoms or 60 mm) - you have planned your trip and reap your rewards accordingly (legal that is) and lets face it I would think that most dedicated fisho's keep only what they can cosume or use.

At the end of the day a saying I see everywhere "A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work".

Mate I hear where you are coming from but if more people realised that they need to preserve (pro and recreational; deep sea, freah water or esatuary or wherever) but have the right to a feed ____ the water would be a better place for us and our kids and grand kids in the future (no I have"t had too many xxxx).

Simple.... Imagine if pollies applied the same simple principle to our lot in life.
    Cheers

I think Sean is a brave man!!!
As a Gold member he would be aware of what is the go is on this site.
To cast aspersions on pro fisho's, keep em fisho's and plasterers is a big call.
    Good luck to you!!!
By the way I am not a plasterer.

who cares where someone wants to fish and what type of fishing they do..c&r or kill and grill..as long a now laws are broken then there is not a problem.

    Re: Fishermen at war!!!

This is exactly what I am talking about!!
I have no problem with someone who keeps fish....none at all, See saltwater photos-trophy bream for 1 example. But these guys at work have a problem with me. I don't keep any fish, purely because me or my wife don't eat it. I am not a snob. I just have had this sort of- 'you fish in the estuary? you big girl!' type behavior before and it got me thinking.
I am not offended by bob's comments, I am purely asking what you all think. At the end of the day there are nice people everywhere you look. I just feel like there is some sort of division.

Btw, it's a jew, it's dead and I ate it, I gave some away and if I catch another one like it i will release it, Because My wife doesn't want another fish in her bath for 2 days.

Lighten up guys I am just after opinions on the topic not me. Sean

sean hows it going,i have alot of mates that fish offshore, but when they see some off the summer whiting i catch certain times of the year they pester me to take them fishing.sometimes it,s not fun for them cos their use to fishing in 40+m of water where the fish just jump on(that might get a few bites)

    Re: Fishermen at war!!!

I've said it before and I will say it again
The only problem I have with most fishing is the word SPORT, I believe untill that word is removed from fishing we need to walk with eyes in the back of our head to watch our a*rse when we bend. Dont know the answer.
I love all types of fishing and dont understand the passion from some sorts of fishing (hate pulling a fish of any size out of 100m +, just hard work), never caught a bream in my life and no desire to but relate to the effort people go to.
    cheers

    Re: Fishermen at war!!!

Pin head sounds like you are a plasterer thats sick and tired of straitening bows in studs after the chippies have gone home.

I guess I am a bit of both when it comes to the C&R or take. I fish both In and off shore and love them both equally. Call me eccentric but... I dont take bream unless i'm fishing with someone that eats them and well because they annoy the crap out of me when I'm targeting other fish, I don't take flatey's anymore well because although I love the flavour the great fight they give seems a shame to me to take them considering how much gets wasted on filleting. My fave other inshore fish ill only ever take 2. But if i'm ofshore i'll go for a bag because family and neighbours love it when ya share reef fish. This year I will learn to chase bass.... why? Because I havent caught one before and it looks bloody great on TV. After I have treid a few I'll let ya know if i keep em.

    Cheers Chris
