AC Power Adaptor - Garmin GPS 292

    Hi Team,

Just got an AC power adaptor for my Garmin GPS 292 from US.

It seems it has the European/US 2-prong connection into wall.

Is there an adaptor I can buy for this transformer to suit Australian power supply ?

You should be able to pick up an adapter from Jaycar or Dick Smith.

    http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView...Max=&SUBCATID=

    IMPORTANT!!!!!!!
You do need to watch the voltage level that the AC Power Adaptor can take - this should be written on the side of the adaptor. If it does not say something like 110-240V 50/60Hz, I would not plug it in as you are likely to blow the Garmin Adaptor.

If you want, just write the text written on the side of the Adaptor in here and we can tell you if it will work or not.

    good luck,

Coming from the US! well that's what you might/would expect? So much for importing direct from the US!

Be very very vary of travel adpaters as they generally do not change the voltage?

I would just ditch the adapter, cut the lead/plug off and get a 240v/12v/5amp adapter from DSE/JCAR etc.

    Regards, Kerry.

Plus if it is an import from the USA be sure it is 240vac tolerant, not 115vac only!

Re: AC Power Adaptor - Garmin GPS 292

    Thanks boys.

I did the right thing and bought a step down transformer 2.13A from Dick Smiths.

This should handle the 1600mA rating on the transformer (AC power adaptor for Garmin GPS 292) I got from Garmin in US.

Thoughts please - before I cook my 292?

Here is the link for this Garmin AC adaptor

    http://www.tigergps.com/gapcinca18ms.html

This adapter allows you to connect your GPS unit to AC power (U.S., 110-volt) and to your PC - rating 1600mA.

The step down transformer I bought from Dick Smith has this text on it :

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/STEPDOWN-TRAN...QQcmdZViewItem

    rating 2.2A

I have not pluged anything in yet.

    input says "120vac" on transformer.

Splash - anything else written on the side of the Garmin Transformer?

Is the transformer light, or does it feel kinda heavy.

Does it say something that says 50/60hz?

Australia Runs at 50hz, US 60hz. This step down transformer should do the job, but as the Ebay link says, it will still be at 50hz.

If you want to give it a go, I would put a meter on it to check the DC voltage before plugging it into the gamin unit.

I think your gamin unit can safely run up to 30V input voltage.

If your still uncertain, send me a pm or follow kerry's advice.

Re: AC Power Adaptor - Garmin GPS 292

    Thanks Oddbudman.

AC adaptor transformer for Garmin GPS:
    Input - 120VAC 60Hz 32W
    Output - 12VDC 1600mA
50Hz is not mentioned anywhere on transformer.
    Does feel kinda heavy.

    Digitor 250W stepdown transformer:
    Input 230/240V AC
    Output 115V AC 250VA (2.2A)
Note on box - "Ensure power required does not exceed the rated output or damage to equipment may occur."

Q1 - I have concerns about this note on box of Digitor stepdown transformer - It seems I require 120VAC (GPS AC adaptor) but output is 115VAC (Digitor transformer) - 5VAC difference inferring power required DOES exceed the rated output - or am I dreaming and should only consider amperage (2.2A vs 1.6A) ?

Q2 - What is the impact on the Garmin GPS unit when the mains is being transferred at 50Hz but GPS is rated at 60Hz?

Re: AC Power Adaptor - Garmin GPS 292

Q1 - 5VAC shouldn't make too much of a difference. Mains volages are often different from area to area by a few %.

Q2 - The gamin unit runs on DC, so the 50Hz won't make a difference on the output of the garmin transformer. Its more the power conversion from 115VAC to 12VDC which at 50hz which is the worry. I would meter it to check it before plugging it in.

If you don't want to go to the effort of metering it, Kerry's suggestion about cutting the cable and using a 12VDC 2A Regulated PSU would be good solution.

The Garmin manual has the pin configuration for the Plug for your reference.

If your still getting confused by all of this drop me a pm.

    Thanks Odd.

The link you provided does not appear for some reason..

I have tried to enter Jaycar and searched for item manually but cannot locate it.

When u (and kerry) say cut the cable - where exaclty should cable be cut (is it just before transformer) ?

Re: AC Power Adaptor - Garmin GPS 292

Cut it at the output of the Garmin Transformer (the 12V output).

Then connect the 12V output from the Jaycar transformer to the leads that used to come out of the Garmin Transformer - you will need to check your polarity (ie Positive + and Negative - )when doing this. (Basically you need to replace the garmin transformer with the jaycar one.)

This is the catalogue number of the jaycar transformer: CAT. NO. MP3210

    Thans Odd.

What voltage should I read (acceptable) when metered (original equipment and not Jaycar).

    12VDC - 16VDC I think would be fine.

I have decided to buy the Jaycar PSU and cut it to suit.

    Thanks for your input guys!
