    Re: Basic GPS marks

It makes me laugh how many people actually think that their 'secret spots' are truly secret. My new next door neighbour has been fishing the same spot as me for 2years and i thought i was the only bloke who fished there- i stumbled across the isolated reef while trolling one day...and i have never ever seen another boat fishing within 1km of it.

    Re: Basic GPS marks

It will even be better if we can come up with a map for Southeast queensland with Common gps. This will help the newby's on locations.

Thumbs up Re: Basic GPS marks

    Hello

As a newbie to boating, only for the last 12 months (if you can call that a newbie, but there is alot to learn) .
I think that that would be a great idea. I find it difficult to follow directions given with location names as you ask where is location “A” and someone will answer with a bunch of other locations names that I don’t know anyway, so GPS locations work best for me anyway (till I get to know them by name). I use Google earth when I get a GPS so I can see the general location.

    Nat.

    Re: Basic GPS marks

I think that is a great idea Timddo and another one for land base fishing (more so just names of parks, beaches etc).

    Cheers, Mick.

    Re: Basic GPS marks

if we all look after the spots with catch and release it wont matter how many times they get fished by people will it

    Re: Basic GPS marks

Many Thanks for those. I am very new to boat fishing and dread having to start from scratch to find good places to fish.

    Thanks

    Re: Basic GPS marks

A quick seach on the net will give you lots of starting points.. There is a section on here for gps marks, but are only visible to premium & platinum members !
One for the novice would be to ask in general & most of the members on here are pretty fourth coming !

    Re: Basic GPS marks

Hi, I'm new to boat fishing as well and believe these GPS marks are a great idea to help the newes. Unfortunately there no use to me as I'm from Sydney. Does anyone have any good spots for offshore fishing out of Botany Bay or Port Hacking?

Here are some marks i found on the net, but like i said .

    Re: Basic GPS marks

The public marks are awesone for a new starter. In fact this is how I started to fish offshore, using the Hooked in Paradise Magazine, it has and aerial shot and the GPS marks. You will be surprised how many spot X's you come across, using public marks as a starting point and drifting until you hit a bommie, drop off, peaks etc holding fish. Also, watching your sounder on the way to the public spots reveals lots more info.

Fish move aorund also, and public GPS spots can also hold good quantities of fish on some days. Finding the bait is the key and it may only be a boat length or two away from the GPS marks.

The list above is great, and on any given day, there are not as many boats on teh water as there are marks above, so you get a decent fish anyways.

What gives me the jeepers are "sheep" thinking theres a boat, he must be onto fish - i'm going there. It has exactly the opposite effect. If you see a boat at a mark you want to go to, go somewhere else, that boat if they have done more than 2-3 drifts have already made the fish shut down and you wont get anything

    Regards Adam

    Re: Basic GPS marks

can anyone advise what formats these coordinates are in? can these coordinates be entered "as-is" into a hummnbird GPS?

    Re: Basic GPS marks

    Hi Coodgee,

Most of those marks are in WGS 84 and Decimal minutes. Most, if not all, plotters are in WGS 84 format these days. Just check your settings on the unit to ensure it is in decimal minutes.

    For example

    27 15' 30" (27 degress, 15 minutes, 30 seconds) is the same as
27.15.50 - This is decimal minutes

That may be true, but sharing good marks on the net is a sure way to ensure it gets fished out pretty quick.

There are plenty of databases of GPS marks on the net to sift through and find starter marks from (fishntales is a good one). Put in some time on the net and it can be quite rewarding.
