    the species you would have seen is of the bellinger river blackfish. they distribute from the bellinger to dorrigo/ebor. when i was doing my degree we netted and trapped the crap out of this system to result in 1 specimen. from memory there are about 6 different species and sub-species within this family. i have had one in my fish tank in coffs harbour years ago and are a magic looking fish. more info on this particular species can be found on the net mainly in scientific journals.

    Used to catch them alot down near walcha north western nsw while trout fishing, bit slimie had fun catching them on worms about 15 years ago could catch heaps havent been fishing there for a while though
