hey guys,
i have decided to do another trip down to the gorge country this summer to chase cod,
my question is what footwear should i use, last time i just used normal sandshoes but i think i might invest in a better pair this time.
any ideas on types and prices are appreciated.

Get a good pair of hicking boots.
There very confortable to wear for long periods, give good ankle support and will take the punishement including dunking.
Best place for the good stuff is a specialist treckking store. Can be a bit $$ but worth every dollar.

I would have to second luc on the hiking boots there. Something high cut to protect your ankles, water proof and a good grippy sole like vibram will do the trick. If you are in brisbane, head into the valley as there are quite a few outdoor stores in there that should have what you are looking for. I know the outdoor shop I work at currently has a sale on so I am sure most of the others would aswell.
what sorta $$ are we talking, i dont want to spend much as i will only use them once every year or two

I know most of the boots are generally about $300 but, on sale you can get them for upto 50% off.
Don't waste your money on cheapies..... spend the money on a good pair and you will know the difference and they will last along time. Mine cost $200 on special and are still going strong after my mistreatment. I think mine are kathmandu or something.

ive got a pairof Oliver work boots which are high sided lace up style with full gusset - they are super comfortable with shock absorbing sole and are very gripy on the rocks and are around $150 id suggest a coating of nikwax or some other water proofing athough they are pretty good out of the box.
I have a pair of Zamberlan Hiking boots I bought years ago for work in a Hardware and timber yard. Have stood up to years of abuse on muddy building sites even tho they are not all leather (some panels of goretex) and are still going strong. I use them whenever i'm walking the banks for bass. They have a special support system in the sole that differs from the usual work boot. A steel rod stiffens the sole from the midsole to the heel. they were a little odd at first but now i wear them all day with comfort. oh and they're light too!! You'll appreciate the value of a quality boot after a few days wear. Don't forget to wear your new boots in before you go. give your feet a least a week to get used to them.
Search out a bargain. Mine were ugly ducklings.........sold at 70% off to clear stock of unpopular colour (grey and green, go figure).

while i haven't seen them first hand i would say they are similiar to my rivers cross training/light hiking shoe. The don't have the ankle support you need for hiking over rocks etc. IMHO they look like gloried cross trainers, not hiking boots.
Even if you spend $150 on a pair of boots on sale, they will give many years with your infrequent use. Don't buy a pair of all purpose crosss trainers that will get hammered in a year or two. my 2 cents.

The above advice is all good. As far as not falling off rocks, the old Dunlop Volleys are excellent for wet wading I find they hardly ever slip in a whole day of clambering along a rocky river. But they dont provide ankle support- and you dont want to end up half way up the creek with a twisted ankle.
so maybe something with a similar tread? let me know if you see something like that

they make great shoes for the ocean rocks etc. but yeah, if your going to hike in........its easy to twist an ankle in the creek bed and a long walk out in pain is not the best way spend a day. How many times do you see it on the news when someone goes into rough terrain, underprepard and needs to be rescued due to minor injury.
Definatley go for something with good ankle support, designed for hiking. Your feet will thank you for it.

Dude I have done a fair bit of hiking/bushwalking/trekking etc ouside Aus and what I would say to you is stay away from the all-leather heavy-duty hiking boots unless you're used to wearing them. a lot of the stuff you see in the outdoor shops is geared towards tough mountain conditions in NZ etc where you have all sorts of snow, scree, rocks, mud to contend with, carrying heavy packs on near vertical terrain. they have very stiff soles and stiff uppers and will blister you up unless you break them in properly. for gorge country I would go with something with fabric/goretex panels with suede/leather reinforcement on the toes/heel etc. something that will comfy from the get go and will be a lot lighter on the foot.
that brand you showed the link to is pretty sound but go for something with the ankle support

I would have to agree with ben. I do shit loads of hiking and all I wear now is dunlop.
