bit of gunge covers a fair bit of ground.

I would be tempted to put a cup of petrol (no oil) in it, slosh it around every time I walked past it, and then dispose of the fuel somewhere appropriate. If the gunge hasn't shifted, maybe it won't in use, maybe it will, depending on what it is.

Get stuck into it with a high pressure water cleaner(gerni) hot water gerni's are the best for this.
You can work at it until all the crud is out.
When finished, tip as much of the water out as you can.
Pour in a couple of litres of metho and this will mix with the water and then tip it out as well.
You will be able to get nearly all of the water out this way and if you have an air compressor the air line can be put in the tank to help evaporate the metho and blow it out the filler hole.
    Cheers Kev.
