You can buy split ring pliers from most tackle shops. There are a few different types available, some of the cheaper ones work worse than your fingernails though. See if you can try them out before you buy.

Split ring Pliers, geez louize, how long have they been around.
Let me see, I bought me first in a 1845 or sometime then
sorry Pete, Yes it is strange that just when you have a problem, someone comes up with a solution to it.
Be very scared of the price toooo, just under 20 big ones for a half decent pair.

And when you drop the pliers over the side and swear in frustration you can alway use another hook to open them up, this does help out just a bit.

It doesnt ever stop. Every time you think you have everything you think you need, some mongrel comes up with something new or something better than what you have now. Thats what santa is for. Just resign yourself to the fact that you are hooked!
All the best for christmas and hope all that gear helps you get a big one.
Snappa,
Just advertise for a deckie and say, "must have split ring pliers, long nosed pliers with bent tip, etc etc".
I only get back a couple of times a year to fish, so half my hooks are ready for the bin and the other half of my tackle seems to somehow have migrated to my brother, my bro in law or my old man's tackle boxes, so it means a trip to the ATM and then a smiling tackle shop owner as soon as I get back EVERY time.
Between that and this warped way of thinking I seem to have aquired that the more I spend on gear, the more I'm enjoying it; if I did some numbers, I would probably be averaging about $300 per kilo of fish. And thats just land based fishing. Makes a charter look cheap.
But Hey, its gotta be done!
Cheers,
Jeff
ok
The split rings problem solved by spending $10
