Multi roller trailer questions
You guys sick of all my questions yet??? :-[
Whittley 630 on a Tinka multi roller
Down the rear it have 1 X 6 wobble roller each side
In the middle it has 1 X 6 wobble roller each side, and 2 sets of 2 fixed keel rollers.
Up front it has 1 X 4 multi wobble each side
Our first outing we managed to load the boat perfectly.
The next outing I tried to replace the rusty keel rollers with no sucess.
Since then it just doesnt seem right. It's possible with all the hammering the front centre keel roller has lowered itself, but I didnt touch the wobble rollers.
The 2 sets of centre keel rollers dont touch the keel when the boat is loaded. Are they just for getting the boat on the trailer or should they be load bearing when it's on?
The right hand group of the centre wobble rollers also has no weight on it.
The boat always seems to be slightly offset in the rear on the trailer, possibly due to the centre wobble roller not being high enough? I jacked the back of the boat up today and centred it, but there is still no weight on the RH centre wobble group.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am worried about damaging the hull by not having it supported correctly.
Re: Multi roller trailer questions
Hamish,
My brother has the exact same problem. He has tried many different ways, and finds the only way he can get it straight ,is to sink the trailer.
His Keel rollers dont touch either,so there is no way to keep the keel straight.
His next move,is to fit a short length of 50X 50 gal tube, with stem clamps on it.so he can raise the keel rollers, and put some centreing rollers under the keel.
In his case, the wobble rollers pick up the strakes, and push the hull to one side.

Re: Multi roller trailer questions
Hamish, I have mine set up as full multi with no keel rollers and have found it to drive on/off much better. Before you change too much chat with whittly and see what they reccomend (keel or no keel support) I spoke with trailcraft before building the trailer I currently tow. As for setting up the rollers find a flat area large enough to have the tow vehicle hooked up and drop some of the mult rockers. My rear set are not adjustable up/down so I dropped everything except the rears and the bow support (below the chine), then work your way to the front going from side to side and keep checking the weight on each set as you go. I used a bottle jack to lift the roller sets up till they took some weight, careful not to lift to far. It can be a bastard and you may find youself backtracking but it is important to have all rollers taking some of the load.
Hope that helps.
Trevor;)
Re: Multi roller trailer questions
Hamish,
what you need is to dispense with your rollers and go with full length keel skids and shorter outer skids.
Like the American Escort trailers (and other brands).
Once you use one of these type trailers they make a mockery of roller trailers.
I am converting some down here in Vic and considering production of some this year.
Cheers
Re: Multi roller trailer questions

BM,
Do you have any more info on this? I have an issue with trying to drive on my boat and was looking at doing some sort of conversion but didn't know where to start.
Cheers,
Chris

ya recon you could stuff up drivin on this8-)
Re: Multi roller trailer questions
Chris,
If you look on the fishnet forums site and search under Haines 16R restoration (or similar) you should find a topic by author "Spargs".
He has pics of the conversion I did to his trailer from keel roller and skids (70's style) to full skids with complete drive on protection.
I have another customer who wants the multi roller trailer under his Haines 19C converted to full skid drive on also.
I used to be an absolutely one eyed "multi roller, drive on trailers only" individual until I experienced "proper" full skid trailers and then further modified them in order to be "failsafe" drive on.
Multi roller drive on jobs are frankly "old hat" and a complicated mess compared to PROPER skid trailers.
Cheers

Re: Multi roller trailer questions
i used a tape measure to get all lengths right it was riding up the left, but is great now.
Re: Multi roller trailer questions
I have owned multi roller trailers in the past and never ever again. I’m building a new trailer at present with not one roller anywhere. The new trailer will be all skid and extremely user friendly. No matter where your bow hits the trailer it will automatically self locate into the channel. You can even try and drive the boat on an angle the whole way but the boat will always self locate. There is no chance the boat can hit any steel along its path as its going up onto the trailer. I will put some photos up as I go.

Re: Multi roller trailer questions
Be great to see that Stu. I am going to be modifying/building another trailer for a project hull I just picked up.
