373 views and not one reply oh well doesn’t look like anyone has been there lately:-?. The guys on the other forum were saying the Red Claw are very slow ATM but that was at 6m depth;).
When I get up there next week I will scatter my eight pots over various depths and see how I go, should I get onto a few I’ll let you know;D.
Can’t wait, this time next week I’ll be at the Kilcoy races enjoying a few coldies hopefully sharing stories of big Red Claw and big winnings on the last…..:2thumbsup:

I am interested too.
We are heading up there on Thursday night for a 4 day stay and would like to pick up some red claw if they are around.
Darren
Plenty of big bass being caught in the Bay13 and Pelican Pt areas, you'll need to locate the schools 1st though. redclawing is slow but should improve a little each week now that it's warming up. Good luck and let us know how you go please.
Will do.
I am relatively new to redclawing, do you set shallower in the cooler periods or do they stay deep and are just less active?
Darren
Was there last week. The Claw were hard to come by, but bagged a few very big specimens north of Kirkleigh, in the sticks north of the 6 knot markers, deeper than 10m. Also bagged a few good size bass trolling deep diving lures in the same area. Scored a couple of bass around the Queens St walls late in the arvo.
Ok, 7 days 8 pots 40 Red Claw they are still a bit slow ATM although they were all a good size. I had my pots scattered in water depths from 4ft to 24ft and the best catches were in the 8-12ft range.
I was there with two other boats, one guy had his pots in the Queen Street area and the other had his half way between the boat ramp and Queen Street. They were getting the same amount of Red Claw as I was and they were getting their best catches in the 8-12ft depths as well.
Didn't do any fishing but the guys repairing the boat ramp said the Yellowbelly were fishing well at Pelican Point and we saw some nice big Bass being cleaned at the fish cleaning area.
I was at Somerset today Monday 10th November, with prawnin pete to see if any redclaw about.
We put 8 pots out at various depths and waited for an hour, if there were any redclaw about there would have been at least one or two caught. We caught zero, we offered a cocktail for redclaw, a mixture of salami, rock melon and skin off gold sweet potato...tried another spot for the same result.
Pulled the pin , retrieved our pots and went back home. Nice weather, very little wind but no redclaw.

Thanks for the update bondy99, I have found over the years that they don’t move around much during the day (if at all) you need to soak the pots overnight. I am heading back up there on the 27th for a few nights I'll let you know how I go.
up at somerset at the moment been here 4 weeks 30 red claw a night 8 pots plenty of yellers up at the 6 knots zone sticks and a few bass
Axl,
I thought that might be the case unless they are very active. I have caught them during the day on the odd occasion but that was a few years ago.
Overnight soak would be the go. Would be good to catch some yellas and couple of bass next time. I've found live shrimp to be the best bait. Finding where bass and yella's are is the key.
Went to a landing point within somerset dam few years back and noticed couple of rabbits and hares, I was keen to bag them for an evening meal of baked rabbit / pan fried rabbit and slow cooked hare. Never got to get them, had no traps on me at the time.
Cheers, Bondy
Ok we are heading back to Somerset on the 19th to see if we can get some Red Claw as the freezer is now void of the tasty little morsels, last time we were there this happended Attachment 107844we got absolutly smashed although we were much luckier than some Attachment 107847. The minister for war and finance then said that the CT was no longer appropriate so we sold it and brought this Attachment 107848.This meant I couldn’t carry the tinny I had been carrying on the CT as it was too heavy for the roof of the Pajero so I then had to go out and buy car topper, I also purchased a Rhino Rack Side Boat Loader to save the minister (and me;D) any heavy lifting Attachment 107851. So my quetiosn, How's the fishing/yabbying at Somerest ATM?
We will be up there from the 19th to the 21st. Hope to find a few fish and Red Claw too.
Going to give the Glamping tents a try.
cragie I will be on powered tent site #33 the closest to the BBQ in front of the cabins (look out for a blue Pajero and a Jayco Expanda), feel free to say hi or drop in for a coldy, hopefully the Red Claw want to play.....;D
Those glamping tents sure look the goods, I had a look at one once when the cleaners were doing a clean;).
4th day at the dam it's been wet but very peaceful , we are averaging 40 Red Claw a day so we will take home plenty to get us through to next season.
Ran into cragie on Saturday he was heading out for a fish not sure how he went, how'd you go mate?
a mate told me that his mate went up recently and where he got his licence they told him there is now a limit of 50 pp......I checked qld government site and all I can see is no limit, can you verify which way it is as im keen now that I retired early to go there, but not if only allowed 50
cheers
forgot to add that he was told he had to get a licence now to get redclaw, can you confirm this as well please axl
cheers
Limit north of... somewhere around rockhampton I think. That's their natural range. They're invasive in SEQ from what I gather.
"
- size limit - nil
- bag limit - 40 from their natural range (Gulf of Carpentaria drainage and from Jacky Jacky river basin south to the Normanby River basin on the north east coast of Queensland)
- females carrying eggs and young must be returned to the water when taken from the abovementioned waters.
"
No limit when taken outside of their natural range. Somerset is outside of their natural range.
Sorry for the late reply but as already mentioned no limit on Red Claw at Somerset robsue, they are considered a pest. I have spoken to people that return the females with eggs to keep the stocks up for the future but personally I don't think this is required (there seem to be millions already) and it is also illegal.
I always get a licence just encase myself or the missus get the urge to wet a line, you can have two names on one ticket so for 30 odd bucks for the week its not a biggy, you need a boating permit if you have a registered boat as well. I take a car topper up with a 4h/p motor so I don't need one.
Ok so we got back home today after a week up at the dam, it was a bit wet with several heavy showers but very enjoyable none the less;D.
We ended up with 520 Red Claw for the week from 12 pots (3 people) so if you a thinking of getting a feed they are certainly on the go at the moment;).
We didn't do any fishing as the beer seemed to keep getting in the way:P so I cant personally comment on how the fishing is ATM.
Sounds like you had a great time Axl. What depth of water were the redclaw in?
Feral we were getting them in depths from 4-11 foot if you went any deeper they weren't around. We started off at 4-8 foot for the first couple of days the followed them into a bit deeper water as the week went on.
I had one pot that we didn't move all week as each morning when we checked them it was always the best producer and it was in 2.5-3 foot all week:o, but if you put another near this one it wouldn't get anything.
I have been chasing these critters for a couple of years now and I cant work out a pattern to them:-?, it just seems to be try a spot/depth if you do no good then move them till you do;D.
This was by far our best haul and for the first time since I started yabbying at the dam they were active during the day:-?, as I said there doesnt seem to be a rime nor reason to them.
I would walk around the park each morning with a cuppa sticky beaking and everyone that had come to chase chase Red Claw were doing extremely well.
Well done on the Craw Axl !! cleaned up !!
Nice to meet you up there mate, a shame we couldn't stay a bit longer and we would have come over for a beer.
That good storm Saturday arvo chased us off the water early but we were struggling with the fishing on lures...not a touch !
We got one nice fat Jewie on worms, but for the most part it was ratty pickers stealing our "Night-Crawlers'.
Might have to focus on the Red Claw a bit more next time.
Regards
Craig
Just thought I would let you know the Red Claw at Somerset are starting to fire, the wife and I got up there for 5 nights last week and whilst we only brought 120 home there were some big ones in amongst them.
I cant get to far on the dam as I only have a 3.4m car topper with a 4h/p 2 banger so I have to put my traps in areas that are well used but we do alright, I was talking to a bloke who had his 4.2m with a 40h/p on the back and he was up to 600 in the freezer between himself and his mate. They had been going to places were not many people venture and they had been there for two weeks.

The missus and I are hooking the Expanda up and heading back to the dam on the 4th of March for a week of fishing/yabbying.
I've got a brand new 8 h/p two stroke Mercury outboard that needs to be run in, looking forward to having a bit more power on the back of the car topper;D.
Has anyone been out there lately? any reports on any Red Claw catches would be appreciated.
Going up this Friday to Sunday let you know
im heading up next friday for 3 nights .. hoping to get onto a few claw and a yella or 2 for the smoker

Thanks for the post modo you've picked up a nice feed looks there's a few around, this time last year we did really well hoping to do the same this year.
Yer great haul for the first time in nearly 7 years of being there ha d a quick fish but with a 2 and 4 year old its hard work and by the time you start which is late the skiers and jet skis don't make it easy good luck and happy trails
headin out to the dam friday. Wouldve liked a bit of rain thru the week to get the claw moving. Doesnt look like we will get it.
Has anyone been catching any fish there lately ? i am planning on using live shrimp and throwing some plastics, blades around if i get the chance.
Did see alot of fish on the sounder lots of schooled bait had a chat with one bloke he said it had been hard work, get up early before the noise starts I don't think you will have a problem with the red claw rock melon is key
thanks. I never have any trouble finding the redclaw.. always use rocky.
I am also very good at catching grunter and tilapia!
Ok so SWMBO and I got back out to Somerset Dam last week for a week of relaxing and yabbying, we had made sure that everyone within our group of fishing and camping enthusiasts were aware of the dates for some time prior to the event and it was good to see the best turn out to a dam trip yet.
The first couple of days were nice and sunny but hot with the rest of the week being wet with intermediate showers on and off, regardless of the rain we still had a ball sitting around the camp fire at night solving the worlds problems over a few coldies whilst the kids toasted marsh mellows and I can say that the Red Claw are plentiful ATM.
Everyone who was interested in taking a feed of Red Claw home brought their legal number of pots with them and there was plenty of boats to utilise to check said pots. We ended up bagging between 750-800 yabbies for the week across the group which is by far the best we have done on one of our dam trips, the missus and I are already starting to plan the next trip:D.

The wife and I are heading back to Somerset on Oct 1st for a week to chase some Red Claw, just wondering if anyone has tried for a feed lately?
They should be starting to move around especially now that the water temp is on the rise again.
