Trying the Caloundra deep water again

Gday guys, going to try the deep water off Caloundra again tomorow 06/09/2017. Hopefully will be a bit. Enter prepared with bait and gear this time.
Heading out about 8.00am, going to the 95-102m drop straight up then out to the 200+ stuff to try again. Loaded the deck winch with 1000m of 100lb braid yesterday. We had 1 good fish on last trip that just destroyed the 80lb mono so hopefully this time I am better prepared. Doesn't look to be a crazy amount of current at the moment but we will have a look.
Depending on how the weather is and how healthy the esky looks, we may stay out overnight around the tempest area or come back in around 8.00pm, drop off a few fish at home and camp in the passage ready for a super early start on Thursday.
Anyone else going to be around offshore moreton tomorow being Wednesday?

I wish, my port trim tab finally gave up, there was a groove in the ram which sucked back enough moisture over time and corroded the electronics. Hopefully get the new ones today.

Gday guys, just thought I would throw up a quick report. Left Caloundra Wednesday morning at 8.00am, jigged some livies and headed for the 95m/102m drop to try for some snapper. Got some nice fish there a couple of weeks ago but nil yesterday. Continued out to the 200m spot that we found last trip and the sounder was blank. Sounded the area for no shows. I had heard numerous people talk of 230m being the secret number so we started travelling slowly and sounding out way out there. At 209m we saw a good show of fish so went back and had a drift.
I heard the words, I think I have a fish on!!!!!! Cool, until a 25cm red cod and a small shark come up.
Back again for another drift. Game on. The old man is up on the 9 1/4" alvey. Long tough battle but between sharing the winding, well out the back pops up a cracking cod. Unbelievable, we had done it, fished the deep and caught something. Shortly after we were both on and they were bigger. The first fish was 18kg, the next 2 were 25kg and 30kg.
Keep in mind that this is a whole new ball game for us and to catch anything was going to be awesome but to have these 3 fish in the box was incredible. We thought we would go down to tempest area to get some snapper and caught 1 at about 40cm only. Just before dark we went into shallow tempest to camp the night as the current at deep tempest was roaring and it turned out to be the same at shallow tempest. Tried to fish for a while and had no success so had a quiet beer and a feed. Was woken at 2.30am by a trawler travelling south that missed us by about 15m. Pretty unnerving to see it as it is right next to you going past.
Tried the deep tempest area at first light for 1 more 40cm squire so decided to try the same deep area on the way home. 2 more smaller versions were caught then another about 20kg. We packed up then and came home.
6 cod in total and sore arms and backs but great time was had. Certainly got me keen for that type of fishing.

Well done, nice boat also. I believe the secret is to put them on ice immediately then keep them there for a week otherwise the buggers will keep excreting the slime.

Gday guys, yes I have been able to give a fair bit away, I don't usually have much trouble, seems people without boats appreciate fresh fish more than those with boats and not many people knock back something for free[emoji106]

Dignity, yeh they are SS weights. 100mm of 50mm shaft is 1.5kg so I have made some 100mm and 150mm ones. We only needed the 100mm as there was zero current, we were fishing straight down

Icing down for a week sounds interesting? We just got one out of the ice at a time to clean and put it on the grass and scrubbed with a broom whilst hosing the slim. Then put it on a hessian bag to fillet. This seemed to work well

Have you been out lately chasing those deep dwellers since last time?

Gday Bondy, no mate not from Caloundra. I did one trip out of Noosa in October and got some more.
I went out again from Caloundra on Monday to wide Caloundra with the intention of coming in close to Moreton to camp the night. I expected it was going to be rough but it was crazy rough. At 6.30pm we decided it would be quicker to cut across the sea and head for the passage than head the same distance straight into it to get to Moreton. We crossed the bar about 7.30pm. At this point we had zero fish in the esky. Only 1 undersized pearly was caught all day. We left the passage again at 3.30am and went to the Caloundra 12 mile for 7 fish only which were nice Moses perch, 1 parrot, and 2 nice mouri cod. We got a 53cm red emperor which was disappointing.
We got belted for 2 days, it was expected but still not what we wanted.
Hopefully the weather will be better in the new year to try again

Lee, you must be a sucker for punishment. My boat is having changes made to the pod, I haven't been offshore for a couple of months now, getting the DT's. Shame about the Red Emperor, hard to get a legal one down this way, have to head a little further north.

Hi Sam, yeh mate your right, I knew it would ordinary but was keen for a trip. It was motor fully trimmed, tabs fully down and 30km/h stuff. I took some video to show why I need windscreen wipers [emoji15] I think I am beginning to think over 20 knots should be pull the pin weather. I just struggle to pull out once committed and have other crew that are also keen. Maybe as I get older I will see the light.

Lee, the pod should be close to completed tomorrow, still working out if we 2 pack it or powder coat it. The trouble is of the local powder coaters one has always been a little shoddy and the other who used to do great work has suddenly gone shoddy, suspect he has some new staff that aren't to careful and too quick. With luck it might be back on by the weekend then a day of wiring and plumbing.

Merry Christmas, Shame about the dodgy work being performed Sam, it's a mongrel when one pays good dollars only to get a job that's poorly finished. I'm still keen to soak some pots for muddies or sandies and try my luck at catching some fish for a feed. I'm starting to get rusty.


Lee, You certainly are keen, I use to go out in winds of 20knts at one stage but at my age now (58), becomes a bit uncomfortable. I have not been on the water (fishing wise) for quite some time, always been keen to go then something unexpected happens putting a spanner in the works.

Gday guys, off to give it another crack on Wednesday. Going to try for a speedy fish early around the cape then head out to the deep for a drop. Taking my niece and nephew to try and get some firsts for them. Hopefully this weather holds and the current slows[emoji106]

I'll have to hunt around for cheap accommodation for a day or two. Not many places like to cater for people with esky, crab pots and fishing gear.
