Am looking for advice on the best type of reel for mackeral and other such speedsters I may encounter in the bay.

I am currently cranking a couple of alveys when iI throw slugs. No luck on the fish but am still trying to get close enough to the schools to cast in the first place. :(
i am sure there are lots of opinions on this one but I DO want to increase my chances if I do manage a hook up!!

If you want to use your alvey , put a set of ganghooks on it and a pillie, maybe a baloon as well.
You definately need a spinning reel with a gear ratio of at least 4.5 to one for slugs.
I think most people on hear will tell you the best reel to get is a Shimano TSS4 which has a ratio of about 6 to 1 and costs about $190.
I have not got one (yet) but Santa is thinking about getting me one. 8)

Jones tackle and Charlton Tackle and Bait also have them for $159, if you offer them 150 they would probably take it , especially if you are buying other stuff. Mossops have one for $189, so it could be sitting there for a while.
Got mine from Charlton Tackle and Bait, I didn't try to talk them down because it was was a fair price and I don't think these guys get rich ripping people off, besides their advice is always free.
Price tag on the box was $225 , so I guess they have come down in price like the TLD's , this one is still made in Japan though unlike the TLD's.
