I have a question about hooking up my GPS to my VHF. This seems like a question for Kerry but others might know. The VHF calls for NMEA (+) from GPS and NMEA (-) from GPS, but the GPS only has one NMEA in and one NMEA out, SOoooo do I just hook up the NMEA out from the GPS to the NMEA (+) of the VHF and leave the other blanked off ??

GPS has ..
pin 1. 10 - 40 volts DC
pin 2. Ground
pin 3. NMEA out
pin 4. NMEA in
pin 5. No connection
pin 6. no connection
pin 7. Alarm low

VHF has ..
pin 1. Not used
pin 2. NMEA out (+) (not used)
pin 3. not used
pin 4. NMEA in (+) ( from GPS)
pin 5. NMEA in (-) (from GPS)
pin 6. NMEA out (-) (ground, not used)
pin 7. NAVBUS
pin 8. NAVBUS

Help ;D

Bungie,

GPS to a VHF for basic one-way comms requires 2 wires. FRom the GPS that will be NMEA Out (Pin3) and Ground (Pin2).

Now some manufacturers can get confusing with what's in, what's out, what's + and what's - BUT based on what's listed under the VHF pins, I would go with VHF Pin4 to GPS Pin 3 and VHF Pin 5 to GPS Pin 2.

If that don't work then it's time to take a closer look at the VHF manual. Don't forget you will probably need to do some configuration in the GPS for NMEA out settings/ports etc.

Cheers, Kerry.
