Hi
I am just getting into fishing with SP's and as my success is increasing I am thinking of upgrading my gear.

I am currently using a $50 jarvis Walker 6.5 foot combo I got from a department store.

I have seen the Squidgy combo's at the tackle store. Are these any good?

I would not be looking to spend more than $150 for rod & reel combined.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Chris

G,day Chris
The best way to go is to get a light graphite rod with a nice crisp action, reel wise you want a light quality spin reel with a very good drag. The drag must be smoooth!
The sqidgy combo's are pretty good value, and fairly well balanced. You could do much worse.

Regards, Tony ;)

Captain_Zero,

I bought a Berkley Drop Shot rod for my SP "flicker" for about $99. As my budget was stretched at the time, I also purchased a $25 Jarvis Walker 1000 tiny spinning reel (Not sure of the model).

Loaded it with 6lb braid, and it has been outstanding for catching flatties! It pulled in my PB of 42cm! And all for under $150!

I may replace the reel when the money situation allows, but until then, it's performing beautifully!

Reels
Daiwa samarai 3i or 71
Flueger trion
Penn captiva
Shimano sedona
Rods
Daiwa procyon or procaster
Wilson soveriegn
Penn pinpoint
Look for light spinning combos, They should already be balanced and make sure you get a box for the reel because if it has a warrenty the application form is often in the box. Try to shop around first and avoid kmart and target and big w as they have higher mark ups and usually lower quality gear. Try the other marts as they have a good range at competitive prices. Aim higher than the 150 dollar mark and then try to get the assistant to bring the price down for you (this is easily achievable unless the items are already heavily discounted)

Mate,

Check out the Pflueger Trion ROds, the 6'6" (2-3kg I think) is a weapon, you can actually purchase a good little combo that will suit flicking most plastics, I am not sure of the exact details but it has a President reel on it, check at your local tackle shop.

Another rod definitely worth a look is the Berkley dropshot, for <$100 it is hard to beat!

The Daiwa Samurai is a freshwater reel with a bad drag, casts well though.
I own a Squidgy rod and it's good for SP fishing, I recently bought a Shakespeare Synergy rod for $40 and it's the equal of the Squidgy.
