Hi guys im new to fishing but i have a mate who has been fishing for years, i was in his shed the other day looking through tackle and noticed he had a massive amount of tackle that was rusted. Can the hooks be rescued and cleaned? If yes what do i use to do this.
Or should he through them out.
cheers

I would chuck them. As soon as you introduce a solvent, you are leaving traces of it on the hook. This is the same hook that you are about to put a piece of bait on. If you were a fish, would you eat a bait that tastes like petrol?

more to the point ;D, rusted hooks would be blunt and weakened. I wouldn't trust them to do the job.

Ask yourself the question, you have your PB fish on do you want old rusted hooks or fork out a few coins and get some decent ones.
Cheers ;)

I'm currently going through the same process as you with a bunch of old lures that are still in good shape. Anything with superficial rust just brush off and go over the tip with a sharpening file. But if its actually rusted chuck it, i've lost enough fish on crappy old hooks to figure out its worth using decent hooks and line.
