Holes drilled in the spool to reduce weight and improve the casting performance as far as I know.

A wiffle spool is designed to reduce the mass moment area of a spool to make casting easier. however it reduces the line capacity of the reel. #Its sought of a perforated, shallow spool.
The spool on the left a wiffle spool. The spool on the right is not.
