Hooks have been starightened/broken lately but upgrading in size has not brought as many bites. I am looking for your expertise in quality hooks of the 2/0 and 3/0 size. Mainly breakwater fishing up here in Townsville.

Cheers

Thanks Jeremy,

I will go shopping tomorrow. Considering Gamakatsu as well. Possibly circle hooks are also worth a look

you must be using heavy tackle to break and straighten hooks? I rarely use more than 6 kg line weight. Dunno how those hooks will go on heavy tackle?

Cant beat a big gun hook (mustad),

we use them exclusively at sea & rarely see a bent one.

Try the 'Owner' brand of hooks, forged hooks with a great point.

Great thanks guys

It never feels good losing a fish to a broken hook

I used the Mustad Big Gun's in a 9/0 whilst live baiting off the coast and below is the end result. If using Mustad go for the Hoodlum. Or something out of the Owner range.

Kev,

I've 3X trebles straighten near the same location - there are some beasts that wonder around the rockwalls. In this particular occasion the monster nonchalantly swam off and I wasn't up to losing my expensive braid and could feel each tyne of the treble let go 'plink' 'plunk'.

It's taken a while to figure out that fishing gear that is stronger than your hook will lose more fish than if you made your terminal gear the strongest part of the rig. That way you cannot straighten any hook - its just a matter of compromising a little on your line class and adjusting your drag.

The good thing about the rockwall is that there is no place for them to go except out to sea - more line usually solves that problem. I've had a queenie nearly spool me off the wall on 6kg mono on an Abu 6500 - the extra line got it tired and slowly got her in from there.

On the other hand, I've gone full circle - I'm now back to looking for thin wide-gape or circle hooks because it's far easier to pin livies to them and then rely on bulk line to tire them on the first run.

Stywe Lyne!! (is that right - I forget)

I've used owners, mustad big guns and hoodlums and rate all of them highly. I'd agree with what's already been said, if they head on out to sea when they run I'd be choosing a lower line class, which will fit more line on the reel (to compensate for the longer runs) and lessen the strain on your terminal tackle. 30lb line with 2/0 and 3/0 hooks isn't a mix I'd be putting a great deal of faith in, though the hoodlums may be tough enough to take it. Just MHO.
