In the market for a new baitcaster with a bit of grunt. Doing my homework and took some prices off a website. Narrowed it down to 3, specs as follows.

Daiwa black sheep...15lbs drag...$599.00

Calcutta te400.........16lbs drag....$729.00

Calcutta 400b...........17.5lbs drag.....$289.00

The 400b looks like exeptional value

Can anyone tell me why I shouldn`t buy the 400b especially when I could get 2 for the price of one of the others.

I have the 400b and it is a great real - $289 is a good price for it as well.

Reggy,

Not sure what your requirements are, but if you are after a big drag, then the new Abu Revo reels may fit the bill. They have a quoted drag pressure of 24lb. However this is a low profile reel and has less line capacity than the ones you have listed. The Revos come in S, SX and STX models (lowest to highest price). I do not think the STX is available in Australia but you could easily get it from overseas for less than $300. The SX is only a slight step down and is available in Australia for less than $250. I doubt these would have the durability of a black sheep but I have not used so I cannot say. Another option is to get a Daiwa Luna (or millionaire) and get it upgraded with Jack Erskine's carbontex drag washers. Would be cheaper than the black sheep. People might be able to point you in the right direction if you let us know what you are using it for.

Cheers

Reggy:

Can't give you much advice on those reels however, if you go the Blacksheep, I noticed in January 2007 QFM that I picked up today that Tackle Warehouse have them advertised for $499. Shop stock only though so you may have to be quick.

yeaaa,
im pretty sure wamjam's on the money with that one.
cause the only why it will get that much is it you fork out the dough for jack eskine carbonx drag washers.

like kirin said, the black sheep's are cheaper than 600 bucks. around the 500 mark but you u get the 300 size it will be prob 550 (maybe?). this reel is great. get about 8kg drag, and feels like nearly nothing can get away from you!

goo the baaaa baa black sheep!!

Sorry Guys - 17.5lb is on the money for the Cal 400 - tried and tested, which begs the question why pay more - durability has never been an issue. Also have the new Curado 300 DSV 8kgs easy and the same line capacity as CTE 300, high speed but larger main gear means it cranks as well - no good for live bait though (no rachet) - thats what the 400 is used for.

Cheers,
Cameron

Well I've got daiwas & shimano's .
For the money and Drag go the 400b.
Still drag ability of 400b sounds sus.
But I'd now still buy daiwa.
