Took the 'van and the tinny down to Maroochydore last Thursday - wanted to have a crack at the local waters, and catch up with Neil Slater who was up there visiting his folks.
Arrived Thurs arvo, and spent the next three days sitting in the 'van listening to the rain on the roof. Finally got out onto the river on Monday - it was running upside down, and would have taken a good crop of spuds if I'd had the sod-seeder with me.
We spun for hours without a look - kept moving towards the entrance to keep ahead of the runoff. Put the crab traps out as well.
Tuesday we got a better crack at the high tide in the morning (and hence cleaner water) - spun and trolled around the road bridge pylons, and worked DOA's all down the flats towards the entrance again. Only fish taken was a smallish flathead which fell for a Rio (first fish on one of these things). Plenty of mud and sand crabs in the traps over the two-day period we had them in, but every one of them was undersize.
The river is crawling with poddys around 6-8", so some fun was had with the cast-net.
Neil Slater and his dad fished the Maroochy river on Sunday morning, and got a wet backside for their trouble. They went to Somerset on Monday and got two nice Yellas and a couple of smallish bass, and then fished the Pumicestone passage on Tuesday and got a few mosquito bites.
So, basically it was a case of thank god for Pizza Hut.
All this talk of Barra - Awoonga's looking pretty good for the next trip ;D

Cheers
