In the southern bay, Pin area and Logan River the majority of fish caught have been whiting, flathead and the occasional school jew and for this reason the sand banks are the areas to concentrate on.
As the tide runs in the fish move up onto the sand banks through gutters and drains foraging for any worms, yabbies, soldier crabs or prawns.
Then as the tide drops they move back out of the shallows to the channel edges concentrating around smaller channels draining the sandbanks.
Areas that have been the most productive over the past week have been the bank at the Albert Logan junction, the banks near the mouth at Aggeston Sands, the banks around the southern end of Russell Island and a few hundred meters north of Slipping Sands.
Throughout Moreton Bay the sweetlip and squire are making up the majority of angler’s creels.
These species prefer the shallow coral fringes of the Bay islands and foreshores.
Better catches have come from South West Rocks off Peel Island, all around Mud Island, which has a few big bream as a bonus, and Green and St Helena islands.
Any rocky point or ledge along the foreshores has also been worth a throw.
These shallower reefs tend to produce better towards the top of the tide as reef dwelling species use the increasing water depth to move up into the shallows.
Best baits are usually small fresh whole squid, hardiheads or a fresh fillet of mullet or scad rigged with as little as possible and preferably no lead.
Best times are the hour before and after dark, those arriving mid morning expecting to catch a feed will be sadly disappointed catching undersize fish as well as grinners and shovel nose rays.
Other species that are worth targeting this week are tailor around the Pin bar and in the surf on both North and South Stradbroke Islands.
Diver whiting are still in good numbers on most sand banks in the Bay as well.
The Boating Industry Association of Queensland will be holding what many anglers have been asking for, a second annual boat show – the Tackle and Tinnie Show will be held on April 26-28 at the RNA with the emphasis on the smaller end of boating and will include camping and 4WD travel.
