The Bayside foreshores and reef structure has been fishing well over the past week and with the moon up during the day, early rises or overnight vigils have not been necessary – as I’ve heard John Palermo say on many occasions, “moon by day, fish by day, moon by night, fish by night”.
Brent Neal and Jim Hiddad landed 10 sweetlip, four Moses perch, one flathead and a tarwhine mid morning last Saturday then backed up on Sunday to land 14 sweetlip and three squire.
They fished around the Wellington Point leads saying the used less than a dollar in fuel to catch their feed.
The land-based anglers have been getting into a few fish as well – Johnny Grey caught a good feed of whiting off the beach beside the Wellington Point wharf after dark on a few occasions over the past week saying his catch rate improved three to one by changing from frozen prawns to bloodworms.
When the weather has been kind a few good fish have turned up on the offshore reefs – Brian Webb fished in 20 meters of water about six kilometres south of Flat Rock on Saturday night for five parrot to 2.5kg, 2 pearl perch to 1.5kg and seven sweetlip all between 2.5 and 3kg.
A few pelagics have been haunting The Group – slow trolling live bait has produced kingfish, cobia, the odd Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna.
The most consistent catch at the Pin this week was tailor around the bar – they came in on the southeast breeze and fed ravenously.
There were also good catches of better quality tailor in the surf, particularly on the northern tip of South Stradbroke.
If you’re up for a drive, Mark Stewart from Byron Bay Professional charters reports marlin in big numbers on the shallow reefs off Brunswick Heads.
Mark said it was nothing to see a half dozen flashing around in his berley trail on most days last week.
The future of the tailor fishery is under review and it is important that anglers have their say – in order to do this you need to get a copy of the Regulatory Impact Statement, which is available from the Department of Primary Industry.
It must be filled out and returned by March 15.
