Big tides will affect fishing this week as we pass the full moon on Wednesday, high tides will be over 2.6 meters through until Sunday when they will begin to drop off.
And if you follow the solunar predictions, there will be a major peak around lunchtime on Thursday.
In Moreton Bay the most productive grounds this week was once again the shallows surrounding the bay islands.
Mud Island was the standout performer with excellent quality sweetlip in the shallows very close to the island, however there were also fish caught on the reefs either side of Horseshoe Bay and the “permitted” areas at the Lazarett Gutter around Peel Island.
This week’s larger tides will allow fish to get in closer to the fringing reefs, especially at night, so fishing these areas should continue to be worth the effort.
The sloping bottom between Goat Island and the yellow special marker off the southern tip is producing small squire and sweetlip and the shallows of Bird Island, which has all but disappeared over recent months, has been a good producer of sweetlip, small squire and monster bream.
Tailor are still the talk of the Pin Bar area but you need a southeaster.
If you prefer sand between your toes rather than bobbing around the bar area in a boat it is well worth the walk over to the South Stradbroke surf at dusk or dawn.
Anywhere between the Pin Bar and the Bedroom track has good low water gutters that are fishing well, particularly after dark.
The Logan River is having a good run of monster whiting this week.
I managed a good feed including three over 40cm in a short mid-week fish after dark.
The prime area has been the edge of drains carrying the run off from the main Aggeston sand bank on a run out tide and the edge of the mangrove islands in the same area.
Another producer has been the southern channel that runs behind the mangrove islands from the prawn farm pipes up towards the Lone Pine.
There is also a deep rocky hole at the up-river end of this channel that has turned up a few out of season quality bream and the odd school jew and jack.
