Although a bit early by my reckoning, there have been good numbers of bream caught in the Pine River, mouth of the Brisbane River and around the Bay islands over the past week.
Yabbies or fresh gut bait fished at night gives you the best chance of catching a feed.
There are also a few fish being caught around the bay islands including squire and sweetlip, but most are not much bigger than the hook.
The exception are the grinners, which should keep you busy, they seem to be bigger and more prolific every week, it’s just a pity they don’t taste like pearl perch!
The weekend’s tidal flow is fairly small representing about 30-40 percent of the year’s biggest tides, which providing the wind drops off, should see some good quality fish caught close to bar entrances and river mouths.
The early evening tides will have less flow than the early morning tides, which you should take into consideration when planing your weekend fishing.
The foreshores of Wellington Point are still producing a feed of good quality whiting.
The successful technique is to cast a lightly weighted bloodworm out starting from about dusk, then sit back on your fold up chair catching fish till about bedtime then go home with a quality feed.
Sand crabs have been well worth the effort but it pays to get away from the well-worn grounds of past seasons.
Some of the better areas have been down the western side of North Stradbroke Island and on the sand banks at the start of the Rous Channel.
There have been whisperings of banana prawns, which I’m sure everyone is waiting for, but my reports indicate that there have been very few schooled up, just the odd few here and there however the rain we’ve had over the past week might change that and fire up the action.
Whiting and flathead are your best bet in the Logan and some of the better catches are coming from the Albert/Logan river junction sandbank however the banks closer to the mouth at Aggeston are also producing fish.
Don’t forget to get your copy of the Regulatory Impact Statement and have your say on the future of the tailor fishery.
Copies can be downloaded from http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/8571.html or you can phone the DPI call centre on 13 25 23 and ask for a copy.
