http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/images/smilies/cwm24.gif Greetings Ausfish members....Our plan was to fish Maroon Dam late afternoon and into the night......We met our guide (FITZY) at the boat ramp around 3pm friday 19th april..
After he gave us a prep talk on safety and a quick tour of his boat we headed off to a beaut spot at the top of the dam ....The water level is quite low at present so we weaved our way in and out of the dead timber casting lures as we went....it wasn't long before i had a strike....a nice bass of 39cms.....boy was i stoked...my first Australian Bass on a rapala husky gerk .......My mate hooked up some time later but he said it was worth the wait.
Two hours went by with several fish boated and released....The sun was about to set so Fitzy said its time to change the plan of attack.....We were to use poppas for the rest of the evening session......something i could not imagine myself doing......Fitzy fine tuned us in the art of flicking poppas before we started to slowly motor around to 1 of the many small bays.......This was a real adrenalin rush when the poppa got hit for the first time......Those bass pull hard!!!!!
The action continued up until around 10pm when the bite slowed right down.....Only hooking up every half hour after that.......We stayed on the dam until 12-30am at which time two happy fishermen had just about cast our shoulders off!! 20 + bass in an evening session ..what more could one ask for.
The mate and i would like to thank Fitzy for a very special evening bass fishing.....You have shared your knowledge with us and for that we say thank you...mate we will be back there in the future to practice all that you taught us.
Cheers Brent and Barry

Hi Brent,
Was a pretty good night weather wise.
You can tell a good angler when they can adapt to something totally new & run with it, you fellas did just that. :)
I would love to have got a look at that unstoppable one that Barry had on, it had to be good to straighten out the trebles!
A couple of pics here for you.

Hi Brent
You sure had a good night out on the Maroon Dam and congratulations on bagging the first Billy Bass. Nothing like that over here but our coast was chocka with Kawai a couple of days ago. The sea was alive with fish all the way to Kapiti Island. Happens once or twice a year when the food is there on the surface. People were wading out into the tide and catching big Kawai with their bare hands. Keep up the good work and make use of all the good advice from your from your expert fisherman Fitzy.

Yep, Bomber even let me on board that night!!! We had a hoot. One of those special times where everything came together and the surface action was intense!!!

Now here`s an interesting thing. I fish this dam the most out of everyone, but Fitzy still outfished me on the nioght.

He has a knack for steering towards Bass. (Barstard!!)

I love fishing with Fitz.

http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/images/smilies/cwm1.gif Hi Randall.....Yes Fitzy told us some stories about fishing this Dam.....He said you need a still night with no ripples on the water and a dark moon to get the bass fired up.......Do you fish Maroon all year round? and if so what do you think is the best time of the year excluding summer?
Do you have a favourite lure or poppa? ...nice pic of you at Somerset...sorry i mean the bass...only joking!!...Have you ever caught yella's in Maroon?
Cheers Brent.

Howdy Brent, any favourite times of the year? Obviously, summer is the go but during the coldest months of winter, during the day is the most productive time.
You will get fish all year round but it does slow up during cold months.
Its a surface feeding impoundment, so fish the edges more than the depths.
The dam is full of good size Yellas as well. Largest I have got is 54cm. (Fly too!!) You will find the odd Bass nudging the 50cm mark. Largest Bass was 51 cm for me. (surface fly).

8 months of the year the place is alive with surface action after dark. Pick those dark nights that are very still and you will find dumb-arse bass everywhere.
Good luck, and hope to see you out on the water sometime.
Regards, Randall.

Strangely enough Aquarius, the fish slowed down once the moon set.
Maybe its time for me to rethink things. ???
