The runoff from solid rain over the past week has affected the behaviour pattern of estuary and bay fish.
Flathead are feeding around the mouth of rivers, creeks and drains on a run out tide waiting for small baitfish and prawns being washed out of the shallows and mulloway are following a similar pattern in the deeper channels.
Areas that produced school jew over the past week are the deep hole out from Browns Bay on the western side of Russell Island, the deep hole off Koureyabba Point at the southern end of Canaipa Passage and around Marks Rocks identified by the first green drum as you head up the Logan.
Small flathead dominated catches around sand banks particularly on the last of the run out tide.
Areas that produced good fish over the past week are the northern end of Cobby Passage, the channel that runs around the southern side of Russel Island, the edges of the deep water off the south western point of Macleay Island and up the passage towards the Iron Stem on the western side of Macleay.
Flathead are best found using a moving bait so drift or cast and wind in slowly to attract their attention.
Most productive bait over the past week has been larger size whitebait, small pilchards or a fresh prawn.
There has been a lot of small squire and sweetlip throughout the bay shallows with the beacon off the northern side of Mud Island and the eastern side of Green Island consistent producers.
Diver whiting are plentiful by drifting over just about any sand bank in the bay with a squid strip or worm bait.
The King of the Pin competition is shaping up to be another great event.
This year it will be held over the May 31 – June 2 weekend with lots of random draw prizes, a lucky entrant draw of a tinnie and safety gear and fish prizes that include $1000 for the heaviest bream.
Entry is $10 for seniors and $5 for juniors, any inquiries contact Peter Smith on 3808 8209.
The Fraser Island Fishing Expo is only a few weeks away and there are less than a few hundred entry tickets left.
If you would like to participate in one of Australia’s best fishing events, get in quick so you don’t miss out – phone the information hotline on 1800 800 543.
