Yes folks, this is not a fairytale.

My 5 y/o Daughter ( Brooke ) outfished me over Easter.

I took her to the calm water on Easter Monday, a little place called Kauri Creek.

I baited her rig and sent it in. The rest of the story goes like thus:-

Blackall- 45cms, Squire-30cms, Fingermark- 27cms, Grass Sweetlip- 28cms, Flathead-55cms and a bloody 30cm Barra-bloody-mundi. :o :o This kid was reeling them in as fast as I could bait a hook.

Other fish included 35cm Tailor and 25cm Pike. The Cheese & Kisses was also donging Squire hand over fist. This action took place from right on low tide and lasted for near on 2 hours. Lost count of fish that came to the boat. Kept only 2 for dinner that night. ( the pics are coming ).

Camped at Dorrigo camp ground, Inskip. Crowded again, but no so noisey. But, I tell ya's, it was Dog-a-thon. Yap yap, here, yap yap there, here a yap , there a yap................ ::)

OH Yeah, I also managed a Spottie and some Whiting at Big Mick. Plenty of birds working, but most fish were still small.

The channel at Inskip was calm as usual in the S/E winds, and made a great swimming place, water sking was the go. The main beach at Rainbow has a nasty shore dump on the in Tide, but the scenery :o, sure made up for that.

Some rain, some XXXX, a great camp fire and generally, not a bad few days away. The Rangers are friendly. The Police are everywhere ( seat belts & speeding ), Fisheries at the ramps and in Rubber duckies, sandflies & mozzies were quiet.

For those of you how are serious about heading up that way, and want to have a crack at Kauri Creek, pm me for the ( reef ) location. ;)

Thanks to " opimax' for droping by. definately do THAT trip soon. Actually , today, Tuesday, it glassed out up there, bugga !

Sorry about being light on in detail, but I only got home 3 hours ago, and just finished unpacking. :P

Maybe I'll add more tomorrow night.

Cheers Phill

Well done Phil, fantastic effort by all the family.
I've been going to Kauri for some years now and on sveral trips we have hooked upp on barra but never landed one as yet. I've been succesful on hooking these further up "Kauri true" and stoney/rocky creek that runs into Kauri just the other side of Hedleys place. Good jack, but as I said I am yet to land a barra! Where did you say it was hooked. I have never hooked one in the lower reaches so I am just curious!

ive fished kauri creek many a time, and its a gem of a place. the diversity of the catch there is fantastic, only heard stories of barra but, in winter i get nice tailor at fish rock, couple of kilos was the best last year, and the whiting across from fich rock on the flats are fantastic, how far do u guys go up the creek but cos i have rarely ventured that far up?

woops, im talkin about teebar creek i think, a little to the south, kauri has the netters at the mouth i think, i wonder if they damage the fishery at all cos they work it quite a bit ive noticed. ???

Hi Fred,
Unfortunatlly Kauri Creek has one netter and two pro crabbers that work the creek all the time. It's a real shame as the ck has heaps of potential.I've been fishing it for twenty years now,it sure is a beautiful place and still produces some suprises now and then. ;)

got the tailor nice and close to the ledge at fish rock on a live prawn, little or no no weight (if you can), right on the top of the tide, caught it right on dusk, bloody fantastic fight to, never caught one that big in the creek, usually less than a kilo.

flytime,
yeah when we were entering the creek, the netter was there doin his thing, they go from one side of the creek to the other at the mouth on the outgoing tide i think, take anything and everything with those tunnel net things, damn shame, beautiful place i agree, if only i lived up there id be out all the time. ;D
