Did the family thing today and took the cook and youngest daughter out for a drive in the boat. ::)
As normal left home late and had to stop at macdonalds for breaky. :D
Got in the water at the grand hotel ramp at about 9.30am and went for a drive up to the pin.
Pulled up on the beach and the deckies threw a line in for a while. Water was choppy and wind blowin so we started back to tittlers. ;D Stopped there for a while and watched a run away launch do its own thing. Lucky owner came along before it did any damage. >:(
Slowly nosied on back to ramp and came home. No fish. :P
Stuppid me didnt put any sunscreen on and now suffering. My face and head are red raw and causing me to feel off balance. Dont drink so carnt blame that. ::)
Sunscreen sat beside me all day. Stupid me. :'(
This is realy a report about nothing. :)

Heya Gawby

If nothing else it should act as a warning to others, the old sunburn can knock you pretty bad. I don't wear sunscreen when I fish but do cover up pretty well and usually stop day fishing from the start of schoolies to when the kids go back to school in app February.

Pretty much late afternoons, early mornings and overnighters only for me till then, although I have been putting in the odd 1-2 hour run just to fish the shore for some fun lately (second childhood) ;D

Drink plenty of water and cover the red spots in calomine is the only thing I can recommend. If you don't have an Arafhat or something similar get one to try and stop it happening again.

As someone who has had two of the top three forms of skin cancer before the age of 40....wear sunscreen!

Ah well...too err is human, we all learn from our mistakes (some more slowly than others :) )

Usually it's the back of Gawbys neck that gets burnt ...
you know when he's heads over the side having a yawn ... ;D

Red faces must run in the family tho, geez Brett sure got burnt the other weekend. Trouble that day was Brett #didn't have enough salt on his face, he kept on duckin.

Cheers,
Tony # 8-)

Seriously tho, I recently had a skin cancer cut out of my face, all I needed was a parrot on the shoulder to be a 'pirate Pete', not #a pleasent experience. Fair enough when I was young (teenager) I never wore sunscreen, ahh the joys of the 70s, lay in the sun on the beach with coconut oil on gotta have a great tan eh? Times have changed and I've got smarter, always wear sunscreen now even on early starts.

The scar has healed nicely, now I have 'ruggered good looks rather than boyish good looks' #;D

I buy the 1 litre pump bottles from coles or woolies ...
i keep it in the boat in the side pocket next to the drivers seat ALL the time . ;)

it makes it so easy whilst driving along you think may aswell , one hand out , pump and splash it on .
Make it so you don't have to go look or stop the boat and it becomes second nature .

I have not been burnt in over 3 years ....considering i go out every weekend and sometimes several times a week and have an open tinny without a canopy , shows it is not hard to cover up appropriately ..

I feel for you ....i bet getting to sleep was a b!tch :-[

I have just turned the big 40 and decided to get checked out for skin cancers having lost a friend in her 50's to the big "M".
I would recommend the North Brisbane Skin Cancer clinic at Chermside for a scan.
I'm sure most of us in this generation have got some sort of damage but I got a clean bill of health.
Its always good to set a good example to the youngsters and I now go equiped with my longsleave parashute shirt and Greg Chappell hat and pair of sunnies.

HI ,snafu here,
as a 2times melanoma person i just have to say DONT let your kids in the sun with out screen on or wraped up.for you old buggers it is too late already, and re-burning only hastens the process.

SNAFU.

PS.specialist said keep your cream out of heat when storing it(eg boat in sheed or car or sun ect) or it is not worth a toss. re-apply every 2 hours and zink cream as well is desirable.

Yeah ... sunburn is deadly. Apart from the big C, you'd be surprised at the damage it can do immediately. Remember sunburn is just that... a burn. Burns result in fluid loss, and if you loose enough fluid, shock can manifest.

Early signs and symptoms are thirst, confusion, vomiting and lethargy. How many traffic crashes on the way home, from a day at the coast, are caused by the effects of sunburn?

Some of you older members may remember, back in the late fifties and early sixties, how we were told to get out in the sun and tan up .... because we looked pale. :-?

Arafhats are the go but remember that being under a canopy is NOT protection from reflected rays off the water. You can stand under cover all day and still cop a hiding. Zinc cream is 100% effective. I have a patch of white skin (can't remember medical name) on my shin caused by lack of pigment there4 no protection at all. I put zinc cream on - end of problem - don't give a rat's a.... about the appearance at my age (61) and zinc cream is also much longer lasting in water than sun-screen. However, sand sticks to it like s... to a blanket #;D

BTW Anyone got any theories about the effect of the smell of sunscreens, insect repellent, etc. on baits. Does it turn fish off? As a precaution, I usually use my forearm (if possible) rather than hand and/or squash a pilly in my hands after applying. Any thoughts?

This would have to be the best report I have read in ages. Kind or reminds me of my reports. "A report for those that have nothing to report" for example, I love it!!! [smiley=stupid.gif]

My report about nothing to report:- I went to chinese class in Taipei Taiwan today, didn't catch any fish, weather ok, starting to get cool (mental note: fishing sucks in classroom, GPS mark: stuffed if I know, try another classroom tomorrow, GPS mark: stuffed if I know :o)

Merry christmas/happy chinese new year

Stubie,

So what have you learned during the class???

Still on: aaa, aaa, aaa, aaa in different tones?

Regarding sunburn I hate the thing. I am one of these people whose ancestors must have lived in shade or worked in flour mill thus providing me with very pale skin.

Can not tan.
Permamently pink.
I get sunburned on a cloudy day.

I'm an older fisherman and watch people apply sunscreen but not many plaster it on the ears, and I suggest they start, after my own experience.

Ears are cartilage and difficult to repair by a doctor; can vouch for this as March last year my ears were chopped about due to the sun.

Have 2 pea size bits of meat to hold my glasses on, then filleted off down to the top of the earlobe, I've always worn a hat but it is reflection off the water that did most of my damage.

My body has the usual set of grafted repairs, but there is plenty of meat for a doctor to play with when dealing with the trunk unlike the head.

Just remember UV radiation goes straight through water which means you get just as burnt on a cloudy day and because it is cold you don't feel it until later in the day.
Its only the infrared which is blocked by clouds that makes you feel hot.

This really works, on sunburn and other burns as well. Put some honey on the burn. Great soothing properties, and will help you heel up.
You will be impressed.

I think thats the secret David. Don't let it dry out. Alot of people use Aloe Vera and a lot of post sun creams now contain it.

Regarding after sun treatment

Specialist plastic surgeon said to use Sorbolene + 10% Glycerine bought over the counter already mixed

Cheap to purchase in pump bottle at supermarkets, rubs in completely and non greasy. #500ml costs about $3

Have a bottle next to my chair and now rub in almost daily whether in sun or not

Stubie,

So what have you learned during the class???

;D I have been learning for about 2 1/2 months now, I can tell you what I like to to eat and stuff like that and a whole lot of other stuff (oops, I just said stuff twice in one sentence ::)). The grammer is confusing though at times, just doesn't make sense sometimes. The teacher asks if we understand and then gets 10 blank faces staring back :o ;D Lots of fun though. Are you in China? You use pinyin there? Over here we us bo po mo fo MPS, which I like, I used to be a carpenter and the symbols suit me more than the strange pronunciation of pinyin. Others in the class have studied pinyin and MPS (Mandarin Phonetic System) just confuses the crap out of them, the teacher is nice to them and sometimes writes in MPS and pinyin. Love writing the characters :P

I should go and study have a test on monday and tuesday :-?
