Dad and i took the canoe for a burn today checking out some skinny jack water and what a day we had. Ended up with 3 jacks, a bass, 2 flathead the largest of which being over 60cm, about a dozen estuary cod up to 40cmish and about 15 bream. We also had another 10 or so strikes from fish suspected to be jacks, plus another 2 dropped jacks. Those who know me know how long i've been trying to pull a decent jack and the photo's below are the fruits of about 5000 casts. Last fish from the last cast of the day, i had just been bricked on my heavier outfit by a bream of all things so was throwing around a little 50mm ugly duckling on my 6lb spin outfit. We were on our way back when we came up to a spot where dad had dropped a small jack about 2 hours before. I said to dad "lets see if the fish has stopped sulking and wants to hit our lures again" a few fruitless casts and i put a cast in a bit further up the bank. Twitch twitch. . . twibang 6lb came screaming off my spool and i started screaming obsanities. Sh!t f@ck get me out of here. Dad was already on top of it and was paddleing the canoe back out of the snag. I was lucky that there was very little to be bricked on and i shortly had the fish out in clear water. The fish was released much to dads protest. I will be back to that spot soon.

Well done mate. A few jacks have been pulled from canoes. I reckon stealth is the number one tip for getting jacks. They sure seem to spook easily.

Lots of crabs pots in the creek so it doesn't surprise me. just need high tide to get a boat in there. we only just made it out in the canoe on low without haveing to get out and walk

scored another two this morning. one was only a midget but the other fish was around the 40cm mark. also got snotted by a good cod. My computer is playing up at the moment but i'll post a pic of the jack later on.

Think narrow and think pumicestone passage. They're in all the creeks up that way you just have to work for them. Try to limit boat noise and get away from the crowd. Put your effort into major bit periods ie changing tide, dawn and dusk. Deep water with big logs fallen in from the bank helps also. Reidy's little lucifers are doing well. Get your lure right into the structure, every foot out from the snag halves your chances.
