I am looking at buying a 99 Prado RV with the 2.7l 4cyl petrol. Any comments, suggestions? Would tow a 5.2m glass CC. What is the fuel consumption like?

Go the Prado.......
My only comment would be to try get a v6, you wont regret it. The 4cyl is not very popular and thats why they sell so cheap. Go the v6 if possible. 8)

The 2.7 will find it hard work to pull the boat.

The 2.7 seemed quite gutsy when I tested it, and the boat package is around +/-1000kg. Not sure why it would struggle...

The 2.7 is good for 112kw/240nm. Thats ok when not towing.
It will be the nm you will be wanting when towing the boat.
The V6 3.4lt has 132kw/300nm and the
turbo diesel 3lt has 96kw/340nm(poor effort for its size).

Yeah get a landy 2.5 turbo with only 90kw - and around 300Nm

Isn't that right Kev

Nah Brett best to get the JEEP Grand Cherokee 2.7 Turbo diesel with 120kw and 400nm.
You can keep ya Landies.

it would tow your boat fine.

I have a Hilux with the prado motor (3.4l V6) - tows well and I have a 5.4m Glass. I'm sure the 4cyl will do it

I've put 110 000km on a 2.7 prado, a fair bit of it towing a boat of around 700kg all up. It does the job fine, and I usually sit on 100-110km/h, chewing about 6.5km/L. I often wish for more power but I just have not been able to justify spending more money to get it. With a bigger boat I think you would not regret the decision to go for the V6, especially if there are plenty of hills around where you drive. If you're mostly going to be doing short trips to a boat ramp, then save the money and go the 2.7. The difference in price is a hell of a lot of tackle, marine electronics, camping gear, etc, and good karma with the wife!

Personally if I had the money I would choose the diesel. I drive the V6 and the diesel regularly through work(highway and towing long distances), and the diesel is nicer to drive, chews less fuel, and pulls like a schoolboy. Next vehicle I buy will probably be the diesel prado.
cheers
