I Have an 1982 toyota hilux 4x4 trayback diesel ute with 250 000 kms on the clock which I have owned for years without any major probelms until now. This ute still has the original 4 speed gear box and this is where the problem is. I think the synchro from the 3rd gear to 4th is stuffed as I cant change from 3rd to 4th continuosly without a huge crunching sound but if I rest the gear in neutral for about 3 seconds whilst changeing the gear everyhting is fine. All the other gears are excellent/ no problems at all. I would like every ones help in trying to fix this problem, what i need to know is a gearbox specialist who will be able to fix my gear box for a good price??? I am in central queensland (Gladstone) but am willing to travel up and down the coast for a descent gearbox specialist who can fix this for the right price.
Please help with names/ locations and phone numbers of gearbox specialists who you reccommend??? ???

Thank you all help will be appreciated

Give John at Ashford Mechanical a ring in Gladstone. He's next to the rip off merchants (REPCO lol). I don't know if he does gearboxes but will be able to put you onto a someone if he doesn't. Bloody good mechanic he is. So is his son who's in Brisbane. I have to say that cause he married my sister. lol
But John may be able to help you out.
Cheers
Bill

Hi Frank
Odds are you have broken the tangs off 4th gear snycro ring. Probable never cause a major problem if you take it easy on the gear changes, double clutching will help as it gets the shafts and gears spinning all the same speed. Wasnt that many years ago all gearboxes were non snycro, they tell me it sorted men from boys. The replacement part will be about $85 but the gearbox will need to be removed and totally dismantled, so with that many kms you would be wise to put a set of bearings. If it was me i would keep driving it and learn to change gears
cheers
