Pushed out to hutchies today to look for some wahoo. We saw a few small ones first up and about 2 hours into the dive spotted a large wahoo. I dove to intercept it and took a shot, unfortunately the wahoo was bigger and further away than I thought and the spear stopped short. Spent the rest of the day harrassing a few parrot fish, tuskies, kingies and gold spots. On the way home checked some shallow coffee rocks. As soon as I rolled off the boat I could see two large rays with about 30 cobia all around them. I dove down and was approaching the school of cobia when I spotted what I thought was a shark coming up behind me, I turned to check it out and realised it was a huge cobia. I plugged it in the side and it towed me around for about 10mins. A couple more spears and he was in the boat. Good finish to the day. Cheers Doug

they are great shots and a whopper of a cobia! I think anyone would have a hard time pulling that thing to the boat - and you make it look too easy!

Thanks guys, they can be a bit dangerous when you get them close and there is mono looped on the surface, one run he pulled me under about 5m when the mono caught on my fins. The spines on the back of cobes can do some damage to the wetsuit and skin when you bear hug them and try to despatch them Spiro dvd is still 'in process' its turning out to be a lot more work than I first anticipated, when its done I'll contact the ausfish guys and advertise here in, Qld fishing monthly, in BandBand the dive mags. They are the only still shots we took but if you guys like them I can capture stills off video but they are not great quality even with a 3ccd 4 grand camera. I will take some stills next time of schools of fish and maybe the bottom at hutchies etc. I was still smiling driving to work this morning, my biggest cobe! My offer still stands to anyone that wants to jump in and have a look at what goes on in the water, just contact me and we can meet up out there- I've got enough wetsuits guns fins etc to have my own small army of navy seals. Cheers all

SENSATIONAL FISH THAT :o :o.
Mate that photo of the fishes flank with two spears hanging out is brilliant. No wonder you thought the bloody thing was a shark, it probably would have eaten you if you hadn't got the first shot in...
Congrats,
Cheers Fritzy

Hi Doug, In one of the photos of your cobia is what appears to be a yellow research tag. Was there a tag in the fish or was it just a part of the spear used?

Mick

I can't see it but I just realised that one of the spears didn't penetrate past the flopper. That is scary on such a big fish.

Thought that it might be part of the spear, although in the first photo it does resemble a tag somewhat.
Top fish Doug but I might stick to fishing from in the boat.

Yeah no tag JC that was the flopper on the spear you can see. He was so thick that the first spear didn't go right through so it was holding on his skin. Was suprised at the thickness of the skin when I filleted it. It was about 10mm thick! Its also suprising at the amount of watse on a big cobia, it had an enormous head. There were heaps of other cobia hanging around western rocks but that one was enough for the week. They better look out next weekend though.
