With some recent hot bites, the long weekend and near perfect conditions predicted yesterday was a good time for a reef raid. The reports were accurate as small mouth were in numbers. Ended up bagging out on them aswell as getting into some other species, namely spanish and shark mackerel, mack tunas, sweetlip and gt.

Thanks guys :)

Lucky_Phil: We kept the shark macks as backup bait which ended up being unecessary due to tuna abundance. I have never caught them before and noticed a strong ammonia smell, this really put me off eating them.

kingcobe: I didn't see what took the tuna, but we have been sharked by huge hammerheads and whaler sharks in the past so I reckon its a toss up between those two.

fishface: You're right it was great weather and a day/night trip....9am-9pm. As for the location, I have been given strict orders by the skipper to keep it quiet, sorry mate.

Don't be turned off the sharkies mate. If you chill them well after catching them they cook up great. They are a bit softer than spanish, but are well worth eating.

I have never used them for bait though, have you used them for bait with success?

I agree Leo, sharkies are good eating but they tend to be more sensitive than spanish and need to be put in a slurry not just sitting on some ice. The smell dissapears after cooking.

Big effort fellas those small mouth sure are fun to catch when they really come on the chew. As for eating quality they aren't my favorite fish but you can improve them by soaking fillets in coconut milk and a bit of sweet chilli sauce before cooking improves them out of sight. Whats with all these early Spaniards. Andrew.
