Went down the coast for a weeks holiday only to arrive upon perfect conditions outside! Seeing this I couldn't help but drive all the way home to pick up the boat! Headed out of the seaway on Saturday morning with my dad at first light and headed for a close reef. Fished it for an hour with no results but two small tailor and a grinner! >:( The conditions looked to be getting even better, so decided to head down to the reef off Broadbeach. Things were quiet using bait so we decided to catch some live yakkas, floating them out 3m under a balloon. This paid off as we began pulling in tuna after tuna, the biggest going 7kg, with the rest around 6-6.5kg. :D Man they put up a good fight! We also had four hookups which we could not stop. >:( I was planning on using them for bait but dad told me they were good eating, so we bled and filleted them and I was actually quite surprised how nice they tasted, a bit like steak really... nothing like out of the can! After catching five of them we pulled the pin with a full esky, only to cruise home on glassed out conditions - what a day!

Try some raw tuna sashimi with soy & wasabi.

Cut flesh into pieces the size of a matchbox, only half the thickness.

Dip into sauce & you've got a delicacy.

Dan.

Are they macs or longtails? I have never heard of anybody eating, and then enjoying mac tuna before. They just don't look long enough to be longtail though.

definately mack tuna - longtails dont have the spots below the pectoral fins or those markings above the lateral line and longtails are, as themooks put it, longer :P
I worked with guy that loved to eat mack tuna provided it was bled immediately- i always thought he was a bit strange though :o
For me mack tuna = bait.

had another look, and now I can see the wavy blue lines on the top of the fish, so definitely mack tuna. I agree, bait only.

Ok You've forced me to make a post on my own effort... ::)
Congrats on the Tuna buddy and yes they do pull hard.
An 8kg tuna both feeds the kids and the dog and plenty left for bait ;D
But I'll do another post on that story...
A sunny day on the water just makes you love life.
