I was lucky enough to be asked to go on a trip to 9 mille trolling and then further wide for a spot of jigging today. after a late start and with the wheather gods smiling :) we had a quick trip down to the tweed stopping on the way to get some livies, where one of the guys got a bait jig hook firmly embedded right next to his thumb nail (ouch) :-[., slight detour into the tweed to find a doctor, and when this started getting to hard we got out the pliars and pulled it out. So, back to 9 mile for that troll. we drove around in circles for a couple of hours for 3 mac tuna, fun but no hoo :(. so about lunch time we decided to go dropp them livies down on a pearly spot. That started well with Sampson, Mourie Cod Trag Dew and a nice Amberjack comming aboard, things started to go quite and the current started to run strong so we thought we might try jigging. Dam good idea, first dropp, tripple hook up on small Kings, this continued for the next 2 hours only to be interrupted by a couple more good Amberjacks :). A fine time was had by all, thanks again Todd :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
PS the pain of the hook gave way to sore arms and backs, but I couldn't dream of a better way to do it.

i'm dead keen to have a go at this jigging caper. do you think a big spin reel, 50lb braid, 60lb leader and a 10-15kg rod would suffice for this size fish in this area? where you on the reefs off tweed? How far out/depth? sorry for all the Q's, just real keen.

cheers,
Roo.

Hi Roo,
A good strong spin reel is needed, say like a Shimano Spheros, I've used a TSS4 on the small kings and got away with it , but only just. The bigger fish will trash anything not up to scratch. I use a80lb braid with a 150lb leader, lighter leaders are ok, but I like the thick one for lifting fish. The 15kg rod may not survive 24kg line, but most fish are 3 to5 kg so give it a go. Find bait on reef structure in 36 fathoms, or any depth for that matter. Be warned, this type of fishing is addictive and makes you spend lots of money, but its worth it.

cheers tiger.
I'll destroy the gear i've got so i can get new stuff ;D ;D ;D
36 fathoms! thats a fair way out. I'll try in a little closer first and see how i go, maybe around 9 mile reefs etc. Deep water=big fishy! ;)
Thanks for your help.
Cheers, roo.

EDIT: Just so i don't look like a dill, I found a conversion for fathoms to metres and now i Know 36 fathoms is 65.8368 metres. tweed 9 mile is about 20-40 metres deep so ill start on the outside of there and work my way out.... ;)roo.
