View Full Version : REEL FAST Record Amberjack Jigging!

Just got back from another fantastic jigging trip aboard REEL FAST. Seven of us this trip with a plan to do a big loop south to Byron and back. Left the boat ramp about 6.30 to be greeted by fairly nice conditions with a light breeze. arrived at the first jigging spot after a reel fast run down the coast from southport. First drop and where on to small kings around the 4 to 5 kilo mark, and with the hope of bigger things they were all released to fight again. Then, over in the corner, Mark claims to have a good fish on, everyones pretty bussy at this stage so it wasn't untill the grunting was silenced with the CRACK of a carbon fiber rod exploding that we relized he realy did! :P and now he's got a extra short jigg rod to battle with. So now with Mark hanging over the side, going red and making funny noises we decided to offer more help by telling him to do the drag up, put his back into it and spot being a sissy. After much laughter and calls of a submarine, shark or a 20 kg ambo, up pops the biggest amberjack I've ever seen. "O MY GOD" this thing is a horse, and the jig fell out on the floor when it hit the deck. It weighed 44 kilos at about 8am and 42 on land at 6pm. Mark didn't want to fish any more but he was out voted, with the whole day in front of us we continued our trip south, stopping a few times to explore new ground, trolled for a short time and had a bottom fish before returning to spot x for another go. No more record fish but a constant supply of kings mixed with another 3 amberjack around the 10 kilo mark made it a day that won't be forgotten. Congrats to mark for winning a tough fight, thats one hell of a PB. Thanks again to Toddy . Details, the fish was caught on a s.w.lab jig, 150lb leader, 80lb jiggman braid.shimano trinadad tn 40 reel, shimano T curve deep jig rod ( nothin wrong with the rod that fish would break anyone's back.) 60m SE Southport. Enjoy the pics. Get all the advice and gear from Doug Burts Fishing World, labrador cause thats what we do. :)

Firstly, WHOA!!! thats a beautiful fish!!!!
in the stomach contents, i can pick the middle part as either a cuttle, squid or occy and the left one as some sort of fish, but the thing on the right has got me stumped???!!!!!
Any ideas?

Great fish there,

I see Raff was on the trip. Was he fishing or being the decky for the day?

Sounded like you blokes did some miles. Great trip and unreal rig you were on.

Cheers

Raff on a boat not fishing, like to see that! You couldn't ask for a better rig.

I forgot to say the Australian record for Amberjack is 36.74 kilos for a fish from flinders reef, but that's safe for now cause it was too hard and we were to tired, but they're out there. :)

I like the fish and love that boat. I'm trying to convince a fishing buddy to go halves in one like that. I can't believe it's trailable. Have been jigging the 50's for a few month's now and the two comments that come up every trip are: One day we are going to hook up to a monster (like that ambo) and would'nt it be good to come out here in a 28 foot Kevlacat (can u leave your coffee on the dash). Congrats all round!!!!

Hi JDog,

Its best to hold your coffee with 500 horses on the back it takes off like a V8 supercar and sits on 45knts through some ugly sea, The trip is a trip, But it don't take long to get there

Re: the Australian Record thing, go by the mantra of the Cairns charter boats - "if you don't weigh it; don't say it!".

Being on braid you would have had to have claimed it as all tackle I am guessing and the record would have been hard to justify under rule 8, Acts that Disqualify a Catch and rule 1, Situations that Disqualify a Catch with the rod breaking. So as it stands today the record is still Ron Jenyns (yep Sally's dad) from Flinders Reef in 1970. World record wise it sits at 70.64kg now that is something else. I am sure there have been plenty of Australian if not World record ones caught by operations like Damon Olsen at the top of Fraser and the West Australian charter mobs if they had chosen to kill fish as well.

Not taking anything away from the catch, I am impressed and it is good to see a few big guys still living on the Gold Coast but I am always ready to pounce with my IGFA, GFAA or ANSA books when people start spruking about record catches. To me if it is not in the book or not pending it doesn't exist as a record as I know how hard it is to get in a record book.

Lynne Baxter's (Jones's Tackle) big AJ from Damon Olsen's boat at the top of Fraser lifted from his website.

Smithy,
Does one need to be an IGFA member to make a claim??

This was a point of discussion in our club a while back, as to wheather we should be members , just in case.

You can be a member of ANSA or GFAA here in Australia and through their affiliations with IGFA you can make a World Record claim, yes. It doesn't go the other way, you can pay an IGFA membership but then you could only catch and claim IGFA World Records, no Australian Records.
