Recreation area laws under review
Laws governing the management of Fraser, Moreton and Green islands and Inskip Peninsula are under review, with public comment invited.
Environment Minister Dean Wells said the Recreation Areas Management Act 1988 and its associated Regulation and By-law were being reviewed, as the Regulation and By-law were due to expire in September this year.
"Public comments on a discussion paper are invited from all stakeholders and the wider community until March 8 this year," Mr Wells said.
"Fraser, Moreton and Green islands and Inskip Peninsula are managed by the Queensland Recreation Areas Management Board (QRAMB) under recreation areas legislation because they are special places and heavily visited.
"While the existing legislation has worked well, there is room for improvements that will ensure we are managing these areas efficiently.
"The discussion paper sets out proposed amendments to the Act and Regulation.
"The main aim of the amendments is to provide for co-ordinated management of recreation in declared recreation areas in order to protect the environment, maintain the quality of visitor experiences and address visitor safety issues.
"One of the most significant functions of the legislation is to provide for a consistent permit regime and other visitor management requirements across recreation areas, regardless of variations in land tenure.
"Comments are invited from all stakeholders, including indigenous people, recreation users, conservation groups, tourism and commercial operators, educational interests, landholders, residents and anyone else who values these places."
Copies of the discussion paper are available free from the Secretary, QRAMB, PO Box 155, Brisbane Albert Street Qld 4002, ph (07) 3227 7417.
The discussion paper will also be displayed on the Environmental Protection Agency's website, www.env.qld.gov.au.
