I'm really surprised there aren't grumblings on the boards already about this one.
I'm #absolutely astounded that Mssrs Hazell & Knapp (front page Courier Mail Tuesday 10/12/02 & related media) would even consider suing the volunteer coastguard for an alleged slow response time to their swamping in the bay Sunday evening.
There's lots of unanswered questions on their part related to why an EPIRB was not available on what is obviously an open water craft, why a flare was not set off (were there any on board) - thank god they had life jackets to put on & a torch. And why would you put to sea in conditions like that in a boat you were not familiar with let alone stay out after dark.
Three cheers to the masterful skipper on the Combie Trader whose attention in those conditions spotted their torch in the dark & whose skills with such a large vessel in unfavorable seas effected a rescue.
I have nothing but praise & admiration for the professionalism & devotion of our volunteer organisations such as the Coastguard, the Surf Lifesavers, SES, Bush Fire Brigades etc. What a valuable job you guys & gals do. It's comforting to know there's an ear by a radio, some eyes on the water & some courage willing to be tested if I find trouble.
Ausfish members - if over Xmas you spot a guy with a tin at a boat ramp or some old salt with a raffle book at the pub drop them a gold coin - best insurance you'll ever buy.
... and to the crew Sunday night on the "Jamie Lee", please think hard about how you ended up in the drink in the first place & who was the first you turned to for help.
