It seems even the pros don't want sea cage fish farms in South Australia.

The Government line doesn't sound very promising but.

Ceduna residents turn out to oppose kingfish farms

Residents of Ceduna on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula have vented their anger against proposed kingfish farms in the region at a public meeting last night.

About 200 people attended, voting for a moratorium on all new developments until there has been more study into the farms.

A fighting fund has also been established to oppose any applications in the region.

The president of the local professional fishermen's association, Allan Suter, says the Government is ignoring serious environmental concerns on the issue.

"It clearly indicates that the local community do not want the dangers associated with this sort of farming and that the Government really needs to get its act together and start listening to the electorate," he said.

But the director of aquaculture for Primary Industries, Ian Nightingale, says he is concerned the meeting saw a lot of misinformation spread about the farms.

"There were many comments made which were purely assumptions, there were quite inaccurate comments and that's the sort of thing I think needs to be brought out in this debate and for the community of Ceduna to deal with facts," he said.

havent heard anything on the eis for the cages in Moreton lately, it was supposed to be released in January for public feedback after the Federal gov released their concerns whether it should go ahead or not. From what i have heard the farms in SA and in Tas escaped fish have diseased the local and surrounding reef as well as native stocks :(
