???Has anyone out there started using braid off the beach, and more to the point has anyone tried braid on an alvey sidecast?
Can you give me your opinions and info on what was used with what.
I'm contemplating 10kg braid on a 6.5 " sidecast alvey to a swivel with mono leader to rig or lure. http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/images/smilies/cwm40.gif
I would also like to know if it allowed less lead for greater casting ability and bite sensitivity.
Thanks.

Hi Gaff

I'm using 30lb PowerPro braid on my Alvey on the beach without any problems, providing you rig correctly.

This means make sure you rig the swivels according to the layout on this site.

I only deviate from this by replacing the running sinker between the swivels with a 80lb swivel clip, threaded through the eye of the swivel clip, so it runs freely.

This enables a quick change of sinker weights according to conditions without having to rerig.

Make sure you get a finger guard for your casting hand, I use a leather finger protector bought from a Chemist shop for $5.00 years ago, otherwise butcher a pair of leather gloves leaving the index finger whole and cut off the rest.

If you don't lay the line properly back on the reel when reeling in, it mound in the center of the reel, and can create loops when you cast, this problem will definitely increase if you don't swivel up accordingly.

One major plus I've found is that wave action drag on braid is a lot less than mono, meaning less weight to hold bottom.

Superior stuff, mono is past history on all my reels.
