Two to face court on illegal fishing charges

March 28, 2003

A Sydney man and woman will be prosecuted after being caught with an illegal catch of yellowfin bream and sand whiting on the Parramatta River, the Director of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said today.

Mr Dunn said NSW Fisheries staff inspected the anglers’ boat at Taplin Park Boat Ramp in Five Dock Bay this week.

“The inspectors found 49 yellowfin bream and sand whiting in an ice box. After unscrewing the floor of the boat, they found a further 41 undersized yellowfin bream and sand whiting in a compartment hidden below the deck.”

“A 37-year-old Canley Vale woman and a 46-year-old Canley Heights man will face court on charges of possessing undersized fish and exceeding bag limits.”

Mr Dunn said recreational fishers are allowed a maximum of 20 yellowfin bream and 20 sand whiting. Minimum size limits are 25cm for yellowfin bream and 27cm for sand whiting.

Mr Dunn said anyone illegally catching undersized fish or exceeding bag limits faces penalties of up to $11,000 or three months jail.

“NSW Fisheries will continue to investigate and charge those who breach State fishing rules,” Mr Dunn said.

“Our fish stocks are a community-owned resource and NSW Fisheries is working to protect this resource for future generations.”

“Anyone with information regarding illegal fishing activity is urged to contact their local NSW Fisheries office or the Fishers Watch phone line 1800 043 536. All information received will be treated as confidential.”
