Increased patrols on Queensland waterways continue

Increased patrols for compliance to boating safety and fishing regulations for Easter are continuing with the ANZAC Day long weekend, Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said.

"On average, nine out of 10 people the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol abided with the fishing regulations," Mr Palaszczuk said.

"The majority might do the right thing, but those who disregard the law should be aware that there will be increased patrols and they can face hefty penalties."

Mr Palaszczuk said Easter was traditionally a popular time for fishing and boating, and more so this year with ANZAC Day celebrated over a long weekend so close to the Easter break.

"Patrols this Easter have also been boosted by the recent graduation of 14 new Patrol officers," he said.

"We want people to enjoy their break but to take care and follow the relevant rules and regulations."

"Also having up-to-date and fully functioning safety equipment is vital for any boat operator. Like car drivers, boat operators have a duty of care to all the people on board."

People can report any illegal fishing in Queensland phone to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116 (toll free within Queensland).

For a current list of the new rules and regulations, contact the local Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol office, visit the DPI web site at www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb, or call the DPI Call Centre on 13 25 23.
