NSW Fisheries seize boat, net & catch on Botany Bay

April 24, 2003

A Fairfield man has been caught in possession of illegal commercial fishing equipment in one of the State’s new recreational fishing havens, Botany Bay, the Director of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said today.

Mr Dunn said NSW Fisheries staff seized a 50 year-old Fairfield man’s 4.7 metre boat and outboard motor at 11.15 pm on 23 April 2003 at Penrhyn Road boat ramp on Botany Bay.

“A 123 metre gill net was also seized as well as over 50 tailor and undersized kingfish and whiting”, Mr Dunn said

“The man will be summons to appear in court for allegedly being in possession of illegal commercial fishing equipment and illegally taking fish from the recreational fishing haven. Under NSW laws, the maximum penalty for this offence is $110,000.”

Mr Dunn said NSW Fisheries officers will continue to regularly patrol Sydney’s waterways. Illegal fishing threatens the sustainability of our State’s fish stocks and the aquatic environment.

Mr Dunn said anyone with information about illegal fishing activity should contact their local NSW Fisheries office or the Fishers Watch phone line 1800 043 536. All information received will be treated as confidential.
