King of the Pin details:
King of the Pin competition will be held this weekend, culminating in a weigh-in at the Beenleigh RSL Club, Bardyn Halliday Drv, Mt Warren Park on Sunday between 11.00am - 1.00pm. All are welcome, even if you didn't fish.
There will be live entertainment, raffles, BBQ as well as the lucky draws and presentation. The major prize is $1000 for the heaviest bream and there will be senior and junior prizes for the heaviest whiting, flathead (under 70cm), mulloway and tailor. There is also a lucky-draw prize of a tinnie package valued at over $1200, just for entering. Entry tickets are available from Motorama Springwood Marine, Beenleigh Bait and Tackle, Gem Bait and Tackle, Maas Marina, Jacobs Well Bait and Tackle and Captain Blighs. I'll be comparing the event and have lots of prizes and give aways, so even if you're not fishing, come down and join in the fun.

dave,

with 4BC & all you'll be talked out by the end of the weekend. Will you get the chance to fish?

Has King of the Pin always followed Fraser so close or is it just coincidence this year ?

Shame they couldn't have been a bit more creative with the flathead (a winning tag or something). A lot of breeders may perish looking for that extra gram. I reckon the jew may be a cracker this year.

Would be excellent if some pics of the winning fish could get posted on Ausfish for those of use that have to work the weekends to drool over.

cheers,

chris

Hi Chris
I have 4BC on Sat morning (the alarm goes off at 3.30am) then doing a promo day at Leisure Marine straight after, 4BC at 3.30am again Sunday morning and then have to be at the comp site early to help set up.
I doubt I'll get much of a chance to fish, if I do it will probably only be a short trip down the Logan chasing a whiting.
We'll see.
I'll see if I can post some pix - it's just a bit hard to be on stage comparing and take the pix as well - If anyone will be there with a digital camera, let me know and I'll see if we can post the winner's pix.

If I am chasing a whiting I doubt I would catch a legal bream - similarly, if I was chasing a big bream I would be very surprised to catch a whiting.
You have to specialise to get results.

Chris - not sure what you mean by "A lot of breeders may perish looking for that extra gram."
The King of the Pin rules have not allowed a flathead over 60cm to be weighed in for quite a few years - the organisers were well ahead of regulations in an effort to prevent big lizards that will breed after winter being targeted.
Now the regulations have been put in place the organisers have adopted those measurements - no flathead over 70cm.
No, it's not perfect but it does not give an angler that catches a big (read potential breeder) any reason to keep it.

G'day Nugget,

What's the entry fee for the Comp, and What is the 'Cut off' time for registrations ?

I understand what your saying about catching Whiting in 'Thumper' bream locations, haven't yet caught a Whiting on Mullet Gut over a Snaggy rough bottom :P.

Cheers & Thanks,
Craig.

I think it is $10 - same as last year when it was increased for the first time in 20 years from $5.

I'm not on the organising committee this year so I haven't been involved in any arrangement or discussions - just a member of the club that is running it so I'm not sure of the cut off.
I think it is Sat night as lots of people weren't buy a ticket until Sun morning, then only if they caught a fish.
I think the lucky draw prizes alone are worth the entry fee - a lot better odds than Lotto that's for sure.

PS - I have caught a whiting on a pillie - legit in the mouth too!

Damn right Craig , haven't caught a whiting on Mulletgut meself ,anywhere!!
Sorry for the "lead balloon" humour attempt #[smiley=rifle.gif],but i reckon if you haven't caught a bream, whiting, flathead, sole, tailor, mudcrab on a longshank with a yabbie in "different" not "foot nailed down locations" ,ya can't fish #;)

Damn right ,specific baits ,specific "locations" are better

dave,

my point is - not withstanding the forethought the organisers of the KOP comp had years back in protecting flathead stock for which they should be commended - the 70cm step is a retrograde move as the proportion of females increases exponentially from about 50cm up. There will be very few males close to 70cm. They should have kept the 60cm.
