Seafood industry representatives will today kick off a tour of Queensland ports to discuss with anglers the Federal Government's draft rezoning plans for the Great Barrier Reef.

Under the proposal, fishing and shipping would be banned in 30 per cent of the reef, six times the areas currently protected by green zones.

Currently in Cairns, the chief executive of the Queensland Seafood Industry Association, Duncan Souter, says scientific support for the proposed closures needs to be closely scrutinised.

"What we don't want to see happen is that hundreds of people in the seafood industry lose jobs for fishing closures that simply aren't justified on the basis of the signs," he said.

It would appear that the days of the commercial harvest of wild seafood are numbered if this zoning cr*p is implemented.

I reckon the Federal Government should hang it's head in shame to allow GBRMPA to do this without any thought of compensation. It's most un-Australian in my book. :( :-[
