Commercial fisher fined for lobster offences
June 30, 2003
The Director of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said the 59-year-old man from Greenwell Point pleaded guilty to the offences, which occurred on December 14, 2001 and September 6, 2002.

“The man sold a total of 11 eastern rock lobsters to a seafood wholesaler at Sydney Fish Markets on these two dates,” Mr Dunn said.

“The lobsters, caught in the Jervis Bay area, were under the legal minimum size of 10.4cm.

“NSW Fisheries officers found the undersized lobsters during routine inspections at Sydney Fish Markets.”

Mr Dunn said the lobster fishery in NSW is a share-managed fishery that operates under a management plan. As part of the plan, each commercial fisher is allocated a yearly quota of lobsters.

“To ensure the sustainability of the fishery, it’s important that lobsters smaller than the legal minimum size are not caught.”

Mr Dunn said NSW Fisheries will continue to investigate and charge fishers who breach fishing rules.

“Our fish stocks are a community-owned resource and NSW Fisheries is working to protect this resource for future generations,” he said.

“Anyone concerned about illegal fishing activity should contact their nearest NSW Fisheries office or the Fishers Watch line on 1800 043 536.”

Be interested to know what the fine was. Or did I miss that bit. Also, was the seafood wholesaler who received the undersized lobsters at the market part of a sting or should he be getting charged as well.
