Dear Mr NSW Fisheries

Please tell your Federal colleagues that we members of the public living adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef would LOVE to help stop illiegal fishing. However, the proposed green zones up this way are SO BIG, we will no longer be anywhere near where the poachers regularly fish!

Good luck in your efforts down your way.

Protect your community - help stop illegal fishing
24 July 2003
The community is being urged to discuss concerns about illegal fishing for commercial gain at nine meetings being held over the next few weeks along the NSW Coast.

The meetings are part of the review of black market fishing in NSW, headed by former Federal Police Commissioner, Mick Palmer. It is examining the extent of illegal harvesting of fish for commercial gain in NSW.

Illegal fishing and black market sales of fish in NSW threaten valuable fish stocks, undermines licensed commercial fishers and the regional economies they support, and endangers the health of seafood consumers.

People are invited to share any information they might have at the meetings, to be held between 31 July 31 and 15 August in Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Forster, Port Stephens, The Entrance, Wollongong, Ulladulla, Narooma and Eden.

Written submissions to the review are also welcome.
