Recreational fishing lobby group, Sunfish, says it is getting harder to persuade young kids to wet a line in their spare time.

A new Federal Government survey has found recreational fishing injects almost $2 billion into the Australian economy each year.

But Sunfish executive officer David Bateman says more than ever, fishing is competing with a range of other hobbies, sports and leisure activities.

"Certainly the other attractions for young anglers is sort of paramount these days, but we've had a program in place for about the last 20 years where we take kids away and teach them, not only how to go fishing but our main thrust is to teach them to fish responsibly.

"That includes putting back fish you don't want, releasing undersize fish and releasing the fish properly so they'll live," he said.
