Brisbane River fish habitats under spotlight
An innovative Department of Primary Industries program is aiming to balance the fish habitat needs in the Brisbane River with those of urban development.

By building on smaller research projects and collaborating with other agencies, the program will take a more coordinated and strategic approach to fish habitat research

The joint Queensland Fisheries Service (QFS) and Agency for Food and Fibre Sciences (AFFS) program will investigate the effects of urban development activities on fish habitats, and explore ways to help reduce any adverse impacts.

QFS regional manager Dr Ross Quinn said “Innovations in Urban Fish Habitat Management: balancing community needs with fisheries resources” will take an holistic view of habitat management and research.

“Previously a number of smaller projects had been carried out to address fish habitat issues but what is needed is a broader ecosystem approach,” he said.

“Ultimately the information will be used to make more informed management decisions.”

Dr Quinn said the program would investigate a number of urban fish management issues such as how mangrove trimming and sewage works affected fish habitats.

He said the Brisbane River had been identified as an ideal place to start the program.

“The Brisbane River is the subject of a great deal of developmental pressure, but at the same time it supports rich fish habitats,” Dr Quinn said.

“The program will look at what activities affect fish habitats in the Brisbane River and how they can be better managed.”

Dr Quinn said the program would initially concentrate on the Brisbane River with the possibility of expanding to other areas in south-east Queensland and the rest of the State.

DPI was also keen to involve local councils and developers in the program and ensure a natural resource management perspective was built into future development proposals.

“We are seeking to improve urban development technology to minimise the impacts to fish habitats whilst still achieving development objectives,” Dr Quinn said.

"We are looking at projects that will directly benefit fisheries sustainability and community needs.”
