The Queensland Government has finalised a tough new management plan for fishing on the Great Barrier Reef.

Fishermen will be banned from taking seven species including Queensland groper, red bass and barramundi cod.

There will also be a big cut in the number of commercial licences on the reef, from 1,700 to less than 400 and there will be three nine-day closures during the spawning season.

The commercial catch will be capped at 3,000 tonnes, down from 4,800 tonnes.

And there will be new size and bag limits for many species.

The changes will be phased in from the end of this year.
