The Australian Fisheries Management Authority says the latest report on fish stocks is bad news for commercial fishermen.

The Bureau of Rural Sciences has released the latest fishery status report which shows 16 out of 74 fish stocks in Australia are classified as overfished.

Authority spokesman Frank Meere says brown tiger prawns from the Gulf of Carpentaria have been classified as overfished although grooved tiger prawns stocks are recovering.

He says while the figures look bad in Australia, the northern hemisphere fisheries are facing more problems.

"In Australia we have luckily got on top of this at the right time," he said.

"We are still seeing a trend for stocks to progressively move from fully fished to overfished but there are now both at the Commonwealth and at the state and Northern Territory level substantial rebuilding stocks or rebuilding arrangements in place to bring those stocks back to fully fished categories."
